Would anyone be interested if I were to post the EBN’s first season sire articles on here as they are released? Each article usually carries a summary about the horse, details of his top-priced yearlings and then a full list of all his 2yos with details on names, trainer and sale prices where known. The first article is on GUTAIFAN who has already got off the mark with his first winner over the weekend.
PN you will need to lead us here, do you think its surprising that Richard Hannon only has 10 of these? Given he trained Gutaifan and he is renowned for his early type juveniles, I had expected to see even more of them with him. Am I right in thinking we should be looking for the same lines of breeding as Dark Angel has done well with?
The Dark Angel nicks are definitely a good place to start. As for Hannon only having 10, I wouldn’t read too much into it at this stage. BRAZEN BEAU was the latest 1st season sire to get off the mark today.
The two we've seen so far didn't look at all precocious! Interesting to see an Anjaal run well today, perhaps a fss who is going to go under the radar with cheap sales prices. Hot Streak is a lovely looking horse by the picture in his file, but looking at the list of trainers I wouldn't expect much from his crop. PN, what is the average sort of ballpark figure that a decent group winner covers in their first crop?
These days I’d say a Stud would be disappointed with less than 70 Mares to a decent FSS. The days of a “full book” of 40 Mares are long gone! It’s so much a numbers game now, you need to get plenty of foals on the ground for the first crop so that you have a chance of getting a decent number of winners and keeping your horse at the forefront of peoples minds come the yearling sales. It’s a vicious circle, if a commercial stallion doesn’t get enough winners in his first crop, no one wants to buy his offspring at the sakes, which means the following year fewer breeders want to use him as they’re afraid of not getting a return on their investment and that means there are fewer offspring to fly the flag for him, so less chances to sire a good horse.
Today's profile is CABLE BAY. I'm away from the office tomorrow so will post any profile's they publish over the weekend on Monday.
