...............with articulate and intelligent sportsmen and women who were passionate about their sport and gave everything to achieve success supported by their coaches and their families. These sportsmen and women gave most of their waking hours to perfecting their skill and fitness and were aided by their coaches who were also intelligent and articulate and cared about the progress of their protegies rather than their TV profile. When they spoke not a cliche was heard only outstanding commitment and enthusiasm. Then I turned away from sport and turned on the football and watched a bunch of prima donnas who were more worried about their tattoos and haircuts than devoting their energies to developing the little talent they pocessed. They were hardly encouraged by the thickest bloke ever to be given the title of coach. Whilst watching the sport there was not a tattoo or stupid haircut in sight nor was their the needless spitting and swearing which is so much a feature of football. Why did our footballers not show the same passion, desire and committment of our other sportsmen? Where was the desire to win? Why did they make more back passes than our very own Dean (any where but forward) Hammond? Why are footballers so thick? What can football learn from the Olympics?
****ing hell, every team has off-days and this one was never destined for much. Quarter finals is as much as we could have hoped for. Enough with the hysteria.
I'm starting to wonder about how good the sport of football is anymore after watching other sportsmen and women give their all in their respective sports, all that hard work, passion and will, dedication they really want to push themselves to the limit and get that gold medal, just look at their faces when they get it,so much emotion it means everything to them. Well done Ennis
How good the sport of football is? Ask yourself that the next time you celebrate a last-minute-winner. Bunch of pansies.
A popped balloon there, Mr Nice. You really shouldn't, you know. Godders does make a good point though. Unfortunately, after the Olympics are over, we'll all return to watching Premier League football, thinking how wonderful it is and giving the Olympics 2012 a passing watch on Youtube. And that will be a shame. There will even be those, after a while, who will say that the World Cup is a bigger world sporting event, when it is clear that the Olympics, as a world sporting event piddles all over my favourite sport and its biggest tournament, because the competitors are more competitive; they are more sporting and sportive; they can totally exhaust themselves, they drive themselves so hard; and when they win, my goodness it is so thoroughly deserved. And the Olympics is simply more inclusive.
Yeah whenever footballers win anything they just shrug and trot off to the tattoo parlour please log in to view this image please log in to view this image And nobody ever gets emotional about representing their nation please log in to view this image Jesus, one lethargic performance and suddenly football is an embarrassing passionless "sport". please log in to view this image
The Olympics comes around every 4 years. Football is on all the time. Pretty hard to live up to the same intensity and passion, surely? Yet football does it's best to do that, and it's no wonder it is the sport that attracts the most consistent fans.
Yes I agree with that, although Olympic sports carry on all the time, in the background, as far as we are concerned, because they get so little individual coverage. That's just one of the reasons that makes the Olympics so special, because it brings them all together in one superb sporting event.

Olympics is way better than the world cup or any other football event, the thing with football is that is such an exciting and pleasing sport to watch.Matches are shown on almost a daily basis on TV once the season gets going.I love football, don't get me wrong, but I've noticed that the olympics show the competitors true emotions which is great to see. That's not Steven Gerrard.
The Olympics is once every 4 years, football is on pretty much the whole year, there will never be the same intensity, as to the stuff about tattoos and spitting, wow how/why does that affect you in any way? Spitting yes to an extent, but personally the more disgusting thing for me to do is swallow a whole mouthful of my own spit rather than expel it onto the ground where it will be trampled into the soil and grass. (Personally love that the American Rupp spat a real a bad one out on the floor right next to where Mo was lying in agony having just won btw and also saw Mo spit whilst he was running). Footballers possess very little talent?? Then why aren't we all professional, estimate how many in this country play football and how many make it in the big time, those that do obviously have extraordinary talent.
It's an England problem. Anytime I've watched Northern Ireland, I've never questioned their passion. They play their hearts out because we're a proud footballing nation. Yeah we've never won anything, but not through the lack of trying. I think it's a big club problem too. I was watching Philadelphia Union v New England last week, and Philadelphia's Jack McInerney scored a last minute winner. He jumped the wall and climbed into the crowd to celebrate with the fans. please log in to view this image Some footballers need to get the superstar head off them, or else they'll never achieve anything.
