What was everybody’s first match? Mine was City v Newcastle, August 1962. The game ended 4-4 so a great introduction to a lifelong obsession! This was our first match since being relegated from the top flight and it was also Ivor Allchurch’s debut (against the team he’d just signed from!) I can remember standing in the boys enclosure at the front of the Grange End. My Dad told me he’d taken me to a few games in the old First Division but I was too young to remember those games. The City team that day was; Dilwyn John Alan Harrington Alec Milne Barrie Hole Frank Rankmore Colin Baker Alan McIntosh Alan Durban Mel Charles Ivor Allchurch Peter Hooper The crowd was 27,569 and this young 10 year old was hooked from then on!
Alan Durban....... - decent player, crap manager. First game for me was against Rotherham mid 60's ish. That sticks on my mind for some reason but no recollection of the result let alone the score. I must have been about 5 or 6 then and always remember being lifted over the Grandstand enclosure turnstiles by my dad.
Masky was at that game Bluescull, I was a young tit, heartbtoken from our relegation, which hurt like fug. I think Ivor Allchurch and Peter Hooper made their debuts that day, remember thinking if all games are like this in the second division....this is good. Peter Hooper famous for ferocious left footed cannonballs (22 goals that season), remains my favourite player pal! 4-4 draws away to Bristol Rovers in Cup (Tony Evans 4) and Peterborough away (4-0 up at half time!!) Amazing that, ‘cos Masky is still only 57
Not the best introduction to the Bluebirds world for me. My dad took me to see us take on Swansea Town as they were then. We lost 0 - 1! I think it was March 1959.
Didn't know that mate. My dad probably did go but I wasn't taken along to the Vetch until quite a few seasons later. But you're right a 3-1 win at the Vetch would have been a better intro for me.
I'm pretty sure I was at that one Nin. My first game ever was Newport v Oldham in 1963. A stirring 0.0. How I could watch from my pram I dont know?
BTW Scull - you feeling alright? That's a new thread and two posts from you that aren't on the prediction league thread.....
I'm feeling young and invigorated. Well, as young and invigorated as I have for a while. There are guys on here who watched games before I was born. And that was 1964. Speaking of age, just before rashford took his penalty last night the commentator pointed out that bouffon, who was in goal opposite him, made his champions league debut one month BEFORE rashford was born. Back on topic, must have been 72 or 73 when I first went to nanian park. Though it was for a home internationals game. Scotland i seem to recall. Think it was the following year I watched my first Cardiff game and the year after when I got my first season ticket.
I didn't get my first season ticket until the season after the cup final. In fact I bought it on the Sunday morning when we all had to queue for hours in ****ty weather for semi final tickets. That was part of the deal. Kept it for 10 seasons since. Does that make me a plastic?
I used to say that I'd followed Cardiff through thin and thinner as I'd never experienced any thick. Then DJ took that away from me. Been the usual rollercoaster for the last 10 years though better than a lot of what went before . Unless you're really, really old.
Tell me about it. City 0 - 2 Bradford; 2003 first home game of our Division 1 season. I had been to the first game following Sam Hammam's takeover but the only thing I can remember was that it was raining and City conceded late. Anyone else there? Think it was Northampton? Anyway the team that day in 2003 - some real hero's. Mark Bonner! Alan Lee Gareth Whalley John Robinson Tony Vidmar Chris Barker Rhys Weston Willie Boland Danny Gabbidon Neil Alexander Graham Kavanagh Robert Earnshaw Subs Richard Langley Martyn Margetson James Collins Andy Campbell Mark Bonner
