Seeing Clingo and Ninian's posts on another thread, who was the first band or concert you ever saw? Mine was a band called Jigsaw at the Kensington Court Club, Newport in 1970. Saw lots there after that Quo, Roxy Music, Argent, Climax Blues Band, Doctor John (dreadful), Capability Brown, VinegarJoe, Joe Brown and many more I can't remember. First concert at a proper venue was Yes at Colston Hall, Bristol in 1975. Relayer Tour.
Brian Poole and the Tremloes in the Regent Pontypridd around 1963.Went to a cocktail party with joe Brown and his brothers bunch of nutters.
The Kinks. Was on holiday near Dublin and went to their concert on the same day Sunny Afternoon went to number 1.
Sorry to go off at a bit of a tangent but you mentioned Vinegar Joe. What a band! Fronted by the late great Robert Palmer and the then raunchy Elkie Brooks with Keef Hartley driving it. Saw them at the Top Rank on Queen Street supporting Argent and Caravan. First on but they stole the show for me. Went out next day to get their Rick n Roll Gypsies album. Brilliant recording but much better live
I can't remember who was first. Alex Harvey Band (Brilliant) or 10CC (Crap) Band I saw live the most about 10 times Man.
Now we're talking. Man regularly at the Paget Rooms in Penarth and then the Top Rank in Cardiff. Like you, I went to see them time and again. Not many left now unfortunately. Also although a drumming inspiration, Terry Williams had an unfortunate favourite football club. I was privileged to meet him on a number of occasions in the 80s when he was playing with Micky Gee and doing many of the same venues as a band I was in. Genuinely nice guy.
When I first moved to Cardiff in 1979 I was staying at the hotel opposite the castle. One night I got into the lift and there were a few lads in there with Belfast accents. So we got talking and they said they were in a band called Stiff Little Fingers and that they were playing at the Top Rank that night and would I like to go along. So I did. I came back covered in beer and spit! 43 years later they’re still going strong and playing at the Cardiff Students Union in a couple of weeks time.
In their early days (the bystanders) they gave my father a lift home from a booking (he was a comedian) and one of the band then was Gerry Braden aka Owen Money.
Saw countless new wave/punk bands in the Union, Sophia Gardens and the Rank in late 70’s. Didn’t see the Pistols in Caerphilly mind
He was know as Dai Becca his father was also a comedian known as Tommy Becca. My grandfather was Thomas John Jones his mother was names Rebecca, that's where the Becca came from. I have always been know as Dai Becca jnr. Always loved to been known as that.
Rebecca clearly carried some influence in the family. It's also quite heartwarming to see such a background to a family. Cheers Dai Becca
Met their lead singer, Dave Bartram, when I was on holiday in Menorca in 1983. Gordon McQueen there at the same time. And one of the female singers from Guys and Dolls.
