#FAI chief executive claims organisation was paid 5m euros by #FIFA to avoid legal action after France's handball in a World Cup play-off

Jack Warner, a former Caribbean soccer official among 14 people indicted by the U.S. last week, said he would release documents linking the sport’s governing body and its head to payments in the region.

Warner faces prison for his alleged role in more than $150 million in payments made and accepted by 14 officials and sports-marketing executives. Late yesterday, the 72-year-old former politician in Trinidad and Tobago published a video available on YouTube detailing his plans to get back at those who have wronged him, referring to himself as a “lone isolated soldier.”

“I will no longer keep secrets for those persons who are seeking to destroy this country’s hard-won international image,” said Warner, the ex-president of soccer’s governing body in North and Central America and the Caribbean, known as Concacaf.

Warner was once an ally of FIFA President Sepp Blatter, and led Concacaf for 21 years through 2011. He quit amid allegations of bribery during that year’s FIFA presidential election, and denied wrongdoing, saying he was ousted for challenging FIFA’s “oligarchy.”

He was replaced by Fidelity Ltd. banker Jeffrey Webb, a Cayman Islands Football Association official who was also among those indicted this month.

    FIFA Resignation
Blatter, 79, on Tuesday said he would resign as soon as a replacement was elected. The corruption charges became public last week, two days before he was re-elected to a fifth term in charge of FIFA.

“I have reasonably and surely fear for my life,” Warner said. “I have, as promised, compiled a comprehensive and intense series of documents, including checks and corroborating witnesses, and placed them in different and unexpected hands.”

“There is no turning back” from releasing documents that link FIFA, him, and the national government, he said.

“I apologize to the people of Trinidad and Tobago for not disclosing this information before,” he said.

Looks like Jack Warner is willing to tell all for a deal. He claims he could end up dead so must be looking for the FBI to protect him.

I doubt that'll be seen as a bribe though, just compensation surely.

Depends how business was conducted, if a legal settlement was made surely it would be public knowledge.

That's a good point! If it hasn't disappeared, it should be shown in the FAI accounts.

Would not surprise one bit if the ex leader of government business Mckeeva bush is embroiled in this, as well as CNB (the local bank).

A bit more on the above.

DUBLIN (Reuters) - FIFA paid the Irish FA (FAI) five million euros (£3.65 million) to avoid a legal case over a controversial World Cup playoff defeat in 2009, FAI chief executive John Delaney said on Thursday.

Ireland were knocked out by France in a two-legged playoff to qualify for the 2010 South Africa tournament, with the decisive goal in the second leg coming after a handball by French striker Thierry Henry in extra time.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona striker Henry blatantly stopped the ball going out of play with his hand, before crossing for William Gallas to score. The game in Paris in 2009 ended 1-1 after with France progressing to the finals 2-1 on aggregate.

With moral outrage over the goal in Ireland and beyond, FIFA president Sepp Blatter revealed that the FAI had asked the governing body to be handed a "33rd place" in the World Cup at a confidential meeting to discuss a possible replay.

Delaney criticised Blatter at the time for his handling of the incident and accused the Swiss of being "disrespectful".

Speaking to Irish state broadcaster RTE on Thursday, Delaney said: "It was a payment to the association... not to proceed with a legal case.

"We felt we had a legal case against FIFA because of how the World Cup hadn't worked out because of the Thierry Henry handball, also the way (Sepp) Blatter behaved if you remember on stage, having a snigger, having a laugh at us.

"So that day when I went in and told him how I felt about him... there were some expletives used, we came to an agreement.

"That was the Thursday and on Monday the agreement was all signed and all done. It was a very good agreement for the FAI, a very legitimate agreement for the FAI."

Delaney did not reveal the exact amount FIFA paid, but said: "I'm bound by confidentiality from naming the figure. You used a figure there... well done to you."

Henry's handball became known as "Le Hand of God" -- a reference to Diego Maradona's handball goal against England at the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico.

Sounds remarkably like a bribe to me!

Bribes usually come in brown envelopes, not signed "legitimate" agreements though.

That's the problem with arrangements like this though.

Someone uses a middle man to arrange a meeting to do business with someone else and the middle man is handsomely rewarded".

Is that a bribe or just how business is done?

The Ireland thing is bullshit in my eyes.

That's an out of court settlement and pretty normal practice. Ireland took the money and should now shut the **** up. They're trying to have their cake and eat it too. Obviously they were cheated out of a world cup but they gave up their right to whinge when they took the money.

Jumping on the bandwagon and nothing more.

FIFA are now stating that they loaned the FAI E5m, lol. <doh>
Edit - it wasn't Euros, it was US dollars.
Digging themselves an even deeper hole.

But FIFA saying the loan was to be paid back in full IF Ireland qualified for the 2014 world cup. They didn't qualify so FIFA wrote it off in december 2014...

    Exactly - FIFA are saying.
But it was paid in US dollars & the FBI are all over it.
Why just come out with it now when everybody's squealing like ****?
