Fernando Torres: Me Thinks You Doth Protest Too Much

By Danielle Warren, March 11, 2011 9:58 am

For all the pain that Liverpool has had to endure in the last number of months, culminating in the, at the time, devastating loss of Fernando Torres, the club and its fans are moving on. We are moving forward into the future, one step at a time, rebuilding the confidence that was stripped away from the club under the horrible regime of Hicks and Gillette and the disastrous reign of Roy Hodgson. No one involved with the club is under any illusions that the club is anywhere near its best, but the progress, positivity, and incredible signs of life under Kenny Dalglish are proving that the end to this fallow period is nigh.

Fans of the club have recently been reveling in the joy that is Luis Suarez, and are even seeing signs of what Andy Carroll will offer once match fit. Mouths across Merseyside are indeed salivating at the prospects of a fully fit Liverpool across the board. Kenny Dalglish reminded the club that while the departure of former idol Fernando Torres was painful, no one player is bigger than the club. Almost immediately, everyone adopted that attitude and the team has since gone from strength to strength, together as one.

As Liverpool looks to the future, it seems odd to keep hearing reports from Fernando Torres, who seems to be focused on the past. Since leaving the club in a rather backstabbing manner, Torres has come out in the press time and again to remind everyone (mostly himself) that he is happy with his move.

This of course despite the fact he has made no impact at his new, “bigger” club. I have watched every game he has played in a Chelsea shirt and all I see is someone just as lost as they were when they were at Liverpool. Not only should Torres leave well enough alone and move on, like Liverpool has already, but maybe he should stop blaming everyone else for where he is as a player and start looking at himself.

Time is the great leveler, and as time has slowly moved away from the end of January when the shocking transfer took place, perspective now grows. Fans were tired of defending Torres’ constant moodiness. I’m sure the manager was tired of it too. I’m sure his fellow teammates didn’t appreciate the way he sulked on the pitch when many of them were doing their best to bring the club out its misery. The bottom line is despite our better judgment, the fans defended Torres because he was our player, and he should have defended Liverpool because that was his club.

After all his statements since leaving, his newest one really takes the cake. He claims to Spanish paper Marca that at Chelsea, “There are more personal relationships and jokes between the players than there were at Liverpool. Everything was much more serious there. Here, you don’t have to prove you are a professional, it is assumed.” To quote the old saying, it is the plainest instance of the pot calling the kettle black. No “professional,” as he claims, leaves a club in the manner he left Liverpool. And remember Fernando, you should never assume, as it makes an ass out of you and me.

Fernando Torres goes on to blame the sale of Liverpool for wanting to leave stating, “The institution was in chaos with the sale. There was all this talk of possible projects. In many ways it reminded me of (former club) Atletico Madrid… a great history, many ideas but without money, it needed time. I don’t have that.” He continues, “I knew I was an idol for the fans but it wasn’t the same any more.”

So he blames the sale of the club and the chaos that ensued, he blames the manager, he blames his fellow players for being too serious, while at the same time not being professional enough, he blames the former owners for not investing when they should have, and he torments the fans by reminding them that he was their idol, but he no longer felt the same about them anymore.

When someone tries this hard to convince every one of his or her behavior, you start questioning why. Torres convinced himself that this was the right move, but you have to think he’s really not so sure. He must have watched Liverpool’s performance on Sunday against Manchester United, especially Luis Suarez, and started doubting his hasty decisions, wondering what could have been had he stayed.

While Liverpool fans are sick of hearing from him as they look to focus on their team and the players that want to play for Liverpool, maybe he should do the same with his new club. The more he opens his mouth, the more I don’t believe a word he says. Indeed, me thinks the Spaniard doth protest too much.

Saw this on Paul Tomkins twittter... Good article so I thought I'd share it.

As a inbetweener, Wish torres was a SAFC player, you dont become a bad player overnight, also a world cup winner.
belive he has more to show, time will tell.

    Great Article.
Torres is blaming Liverpool for his poor form.Well that just takes the biscuit. He hasn't been right in 18 months,so I guess thats Liverpools fault too. When we needed him in 2008/2009 when we were in a position of strength, where was he for a large chunk of the season.Okay he contributed 14 goals in 19 league games, but what about the other 19.He was injured.
The second point I would like to make is the great Liverpool strikers all had one thing in common, they all played with a smile on their face, and lets not forget,Robbie Fowler played in a worse Liverpool team than Torres did,but Robbie played with a huge grin on his face. They all had unbelievable energy.Torres moped about for 6 months.
The one thing I like about Luis Suarez is he does both.He knows things aren't perfect, but he's tuned into what Kenny wants to do.He's willing to show faith in Kenny and be patient enough to allow him to do it.Not only is Luis Suarez a pint sized magician, but you've seen it yourself,he's a competitor,He ex manager called him a ''pint sized street fighter''.He's got boundless energy.I reckon he's the player that Wayne Rooney will never be.He's Rooney with skill.I used to call Rooney ''Dirk Kuyt with a temper'',I still stand by that comment.

Just because you've moved on doesn't mean you have you ignore provocative and quite ridiculous statements to prove you have.

It's possible Torres was just responding to an interviewer's question but the content of his accusations deserves to be challenged and countered, just as if an ex were going round saying you cheated on her and weren't as good in bed as her new boyfriend. You could ignore her but does the bitch deserve to get away with such rubbish, you hunka hunka love?

Brian Reade wrote a brilliant article this morning.
Here are some of the points that were made, some of the media were shouting that Kenny deserved a contract after the mauling Liverpool gave Man United.Reade says that he should have got one after the defeat to Braga over the way he savaged his players for an unacceptable performance.
This should put an end to the nonsense that Man United was Liverpools cup final. The premier league and the Liverpool players themselves would want to be extremely worried.Kenny is going to embark on a ruthless rebuild. If the players themselves won't put in the shift and graft,He'll find players that will. There is already players that Kenny has told without actually telling them that they are being shipped out.Jovanovic and Konchesky being examples.I reckon there will be a few more getting a bit worried that the same thing will happen to them.;Poulsen is being picked for the Europa league and he is in danger of getting the push.

we have suarez and a soon match fit andy carrol so we dont need torres, torres is the one who has lost out and serves him right.
kenny WILL get a permanant contract and he WILL sort out this team by telling the players who they are actually playing for,
    so start playing with passion.
the future is bright the future is ANFIELD :)

spot on david ngog but he may get his wish on champs league next season, but i tell you one thing if i was torres i would be rather playing under kenny cos he is mr liverpool and when he gets his contract and gets the players playing and we play teams like chelsea and we just walk all over them he may realise what a mistake he made.
fernando its king kenny he is liverpool and its just shows how ignorant you really are.

Nice article Muppet. It's hard to read between the lines atm. How much is this just paper talk putting pressure on him- or are Chelsea starting to get a bit annoyed and he realy is homesick? I used to dismiss the press too much, but it actualy turns out there usualy is an element of truth in their stories.

He is struggling, he still has that sulky look to him, head down, expecting the killer pass on a plate. I for what am enjoying his struggles, oddly I dont feel any ill will towards Chelsea. He still looks an outsider to me, Drogba is still the man.

Hard to tell. Interviewers put questions to players. It's not like he's stormed into an editor's office demanding to have his say on Liverpool NOW! Then the quotes aren't verbatim and inflection is missing.

I think he needs to get his head down and keep at it. He's their focus for the future and while he may not be fitting in now, Chelsea will obviously have more of a plan to fit around Torres than to fit Torres around Anelka and Drogba. Or they should.

I think it would be natural for him to be a little envious of Suarez providing what he was not currently. it may also bother him that we have moved on so quickly and I honestly felt at times he half regretted his move, he was the man at liverpool, he is anything but at Chelsea.

he didn't make friends at liverpool, I think that much was clear, I think the binding fact was rafa Pepe Arbeloa Riera Xabi, when all that fell apart I thought reina n'all would be gone by this summer. I knew nando was gone after Rafa left I just knew it.
