Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested his players could be banned from using Twitter. please log in to view this image The micro-blogging website is used by United players including Wayne Rooney, who was involved in an incident with a follower on Tuesday. While Ferguson, 69, said he did not understand Twitter, he said the club are looking at the possible "issues attached" to using the website. "I don't know why anybody can be bothered with that stuff," he said. "How do you find the time to do that? There are a million things you can do in your life without that. "Get yourself down to the library and read a book. Seriously. It is a waste of time." Rooney has collected more than 500,000 followers in less than a month "It seems to have a certain momentum at the moment. Everyone seems to want to do it." "Get yourself down to the library and read a book. Seriously. It is a waste of time." Lol, what a legend! I don't know if we need a ban. I'd prefer the club and media officers just sat down with the players who want to go on Twitter and gave them a bit of guidance. It wouldn't take that much to tell the players "don't insult anyone, don't threaten anyone, don't talk about referees, don't make any jokes that might be offensive, and if some dipper twat threatens to hit you with a golf club just ignore them". At the least the club should have PR bloke on hand that the players can quickly check stuff with if they think it might be a bit off. To be honest, I think our whole handling of the media player and manager wise is a bit poor. Whenever film stars get interviewed or put out some promo material, they always have a PR adviser to tell them what will go down well and what won't fly. Why don't we have the same? I still can't believe it was MUTV who broadcast the "Atkinson wasn't a fair referee" interview that got SAF a five game ban
Yeah, why on earth players (Across English & Scottish Football) are saying some of these stupid things, and clubs don't do anything, I will never know. Like you say, you would think with the amount of money and the level of media involved in football, that clubs would have been monitoring this more closely. I personally hope a ban isn't put upon them, as obviously there are some who have always used it responsibly. I also don't think these comments from Fergie indicate a ban will be issued, but that there will be serious guidelines put into place - Which it's about time for.
