We have got to be some of the worst fans in the world? The way some of you lot on here build a player up, 'he's the next paul scholes' 'don't worry we have the calm and composed jack colback' Whats it going to be when he has a run of a few bad games? 'he's a liability!' 'not good enough' 'why does Bruce insist on playing him?!' The exact same thing will end up happening to colback as it did to Henderson, unless colback has wonderful form throughout the season. You couldn't say a thing wrong about Henderson 9 months ago on here, you would be hounded down amediatly, and now you can hardly find a soul that likes him! Some fans went as far as booing Henderson on the pitch last year, getting on his back, a sunderland lad through and through, working his heart out and the fans laid into him, the same fans that praised him to the hills earlia on in the season, ****ing discrase. It seems as though most want rid of cattermole, that would be a disaster. If he can stay fit, he is the heart and soul of our team, I.e the first half of our season, he was playing pretty much every week, he goes off injured, yes with others, but we missed him incredibly. He fights like a lion, good on the ball, and keeps the spirit and hunger in our side. Replace cattermole with colback? Hmm. My opinion on colback Is that he's good on the ball, composed, but that's as far as I've seen with him, he's not the level of player YET to take us forward, and there's no way he can install the fight and drive. He's being bigged up too much, just like Henderson was. I wrote an article on 606 about Henderson, saying apart from keep the game flowing, and hard work, there's not much else he does, I think one person agreed, the rest said I didn't have a clue. But I still support the lad, he's one of us, he works his bollocks off for us, he's no where near what people made out he was going to be, but he's still a Sunderland supporter in the shirt giving his all, and to hide behind a computer screen and call him a liability after praising him to the gods, shame on you. What's ahead for colback? Let's just hope he has inch perfect form for the rest of his time here!
Don't know how things will pan out. He may well turn out to be great, he may not. He may not get many games depending on who Bruce signs. Bruce may prefer to play Meyler, or Catts (if we still have him) Think you may find Henderson still has many supporters on here. How things will pan out? no-one knows. So you can't really say everyone will turn on him, i'm sure he will get a lot more time than some expensive import.
Got bored after. ' Feel sorry for jack colback We have got to be some of the worst fans in the world?'
Fans have changed since I first started going to games. You did not boo at all. mind you I have been going since the mid fifties
gbSAFC4ever Dear oh, dear! A word of advice again, as we've had this discussion before haven't we? Run your posts by me before you push the button send. That way you will save yourself a lot of grief and abuse. You see there is an art to being controversial and not simply looking like a twat and you just don’t seem to have mastered that ability yet. As a past master of the art of contraversy, I'll happily read over your drivel before hand if you like? Be bold and state your case but don’t start post with the pre-fix "we have some of the worst fans in the world" or else all you will get back is a huge 'PISS OFF YOU WALLY' from everyone. Ok?
We donèt expect too much. We tend to build players up to something that they are not. At the same time in a more general sense we expect very little, far too little. An example of this is Elmo. When we get a player who is anything above complete and abject ****e he is regarded as a world beater. This is a bloke that is ****ing useless. He hasnèt scored and created two goals last season but people defend him. Won nowt for close to 40 years. How can we expect too much.
Agree with you on the Elmo front....... The only time I will warm to him is if he turns up for the first game of the season in a Fez. The premier league is still searching for it's first half decent Egyptian.
Although I disagree with the tone of your post, I do understand the point you are trying to make, but would ask you this question... Are we supposed to say "what a great game he had" when he obviously played ****e? Like everyone else, I will voice my opinion if a player is off form, after all, that is what this forum is all about, people's opinions of the club, players, manager etc. I would bet my life on it that every board of every club will have negative comments about one or two of their players, that's football mate. Unfortunately, Jordan Henderson suffered from some poor man management last season. SB must have seen as we did, that JH was out of form, but he refused to drop him, playing him game after game, when the likes of Zenden and Steed were sat warming the bench. To Steve Bruce's credit, he did come out and say recently that he should have played Zenden more than he did, but it's too late now, isn't it? It's the managers job to protect young players, but he just didn't do it and Jordan suffered because Steve Bruce didn't do his job. Jack Colback was a revelation towards the end of last season, a cracking player who has the ability and potential to keep Catts out of the starting line up next season, as long as he is managed to a better standard than Jordan was.
Sunderland fans, in my experience, are generally very knowledgeable and a decent bunch. I have seen some dross in my time at both SoL and Roker before that but I have never, ever booed Sunderland players. I am sure I felt as bad as any other fan after some games.People who boo their own players are immature twats who need to grow up. I have booed some of the opposition players (though rarely) and one I did boo ended up being our manager. Lets hope for some good signings and a good season with happy fans.
Cattermole is a top player WHEN FIT. He's our captain and our captain should be playing every game (or at least the majority). If Liverpool put in a £10million bid for a player who has played just 22 games (from wikipedia) in a season then i'd be wanting to take it. I do think Henderson has came in for a lot of harsh criticism as none of our players have performed well over the last couple of months let alone our youngest and least experienced! He needs a summer or at least a few weeks off to be fully charged for another top 10 push. Colback has followed the same pattern as Henderson. Loaned out to the championship and did well before returning and breaking into the squad and then the first team. From what I've saw he looks a very decent player and will keep on improving. I think we have the right to get excited when a new player breaks into the team from the academy and he looked like a breath of fresh air as he actually worked hard for the team. Every club has its idiots. Some people have been imprssed with Henderson, some people haven't been (or not as much). Everybody is entitled to their opinion if they justify it. Some people just like to find a whipping boy to direct abuse at and they are the people you should have aimed this article at.
I didn't see the lads much during the 2nd half of the season just finished due to various reasons, and so i have pretty much no idea how Colback performed. I'll be amazed as much as i will be overjoyed if he plays to the standard people on here seem to suggest? Do we really have a player in Colback who can play comfortable to a top 10 standard season after season? Is he really a player who can repeatedly effect big games? I really hope so and i look forward to seeing him to find out for myself. In the meantime, i think Catts is a good player and i'll be well disappointed if we let him go. Catts is not well appreciated by Sunderland fans, i think he's a better footballer than most fans think.
I think when you are starved of quality players for so long, one or two with potential come along and they're seen by the fans of their club as a lot better than in reality. Happens in all the smaller clubs. 'Next Scholes' is bollocks frankly.
Not one Sunderland fan has said 'the next scholes' apart from the OP quoting somebody else. They'd be absolutely insane to say a thing like that!
SOME - of the worst fans in the world... That was the statement and I agree. We have loads of fickle foul mouthed whingers scattered throughout the SOL. We dfinitely do have a larger than average contingent that match his description just as we have a similarly large number [especially for away games] that can qualify some of the very best.
I agree. As to the OP, remember this is a football forum for people to express their opinions. When someone is perceived to be good, then their performance drops below what is expected, of course people will express their displeasure. But after all it is THEIR opinion, and they are entitled to express it by way of this forum. This is often a way of getting rid of some frustration, writing down the greivances from the match. Far from being the worst supporters, I can remember Sunderland (2nd div) getting up to 15,000 for a reserve match when the likes of Leeds United (1st div) were only getting 17,000 for a first team game. Yes you will always get some who boo their own team, either through frustration, or bravado, to impress their mate. IMO Sunderland fans in general are quite knowledgeable about the game their team and their club, and again IMO, some of the best fans in the EPL.
