    I recently had a PPI one. As soon as I realised what it was, I just said 'Oh **** Off' and killed the call. It was most therapeutic.

    Nuisance calls are illegal if you have opted out.

    You opt out via a service from your telephone provider, or, services such as TPS in the UK.

    Be wary when filling in any kind of web form - be sure to look for an opt out option.

    Note also, that even when you opt out it won't stop nuisance calls completely. Many large companies prefer to pay the fines than stop bothering potential sales.
