Think it was George who had suggested they bring this back. Not really sure if there are enough "characters" around these days to warrant it. The Royal Family would still be good but there are a real lack of characters in Politics nowadays compared to the the 80's and 90's. At it's peak from 84 to about 92 it was essential viewing but then tragically lost it's way. I think my personal favourites would have to Roy Hattersely and John "the peas are very green tonight Norma" Major. Even Mr Grey himself was a character, even more so when it emerged he had been currying Edwina's eggs.
Spitting Image was too soft on the royal family, if anything they gave them a warmth they did not posess, especially the old girl, big time bungle.
Dunno about characters but the stand out gag from Spitting Image that I can recall was when some darkies jumped out and stabbed PW Botha while singing "Can't put a betta bit a butta on ya knife" which was mimicking a popular butter advert of the time.
Norman tebbit the leather jacket wearing thug. Remember one sketch where Maggie and the Cabinet went for a meal: Waiter: would you like to order? Maggie: I'll have the steak Waiter: how would you like it? Maggie: raw Waiter: and the vegetables? Maggie: they'll have the same
Phil the Greek sneaking down the kebab shop while the Queen was asleep, and reminiscing with Costas about how they used to ride around Corfu on mopeds trying to pull English birds.
