My favourite quote about football is from Bill Shankly: "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that". Anyone got any others?
I liked what some Slumberland fan tweeted yesterday. "I was going to leave early, but decided to stay to the end to avoid the crowds!"
" If you can't support us when we lose or draw , don't support us when we win " Some on here should keep that in mind.
Another Shankly one - "My wife said you love football more than me - I said I love Everton more than you!"
Shanklywas quoting the coach of a gridiron football team when he said that. Another gridiron one from Vince Lombardi "Winning isn't the most important thing. It is the only thing". Always liked the Bill Nicholson one, often wrongly attributed to someone else, about someone being offside interfering with play "If he's not interfering with play what is he doing on the pitch?"
'Well, I can play in the centre, on the right and occasionally on the left side.' David Beckham on being asked if he was a 'volatile' player
Vince Lombardi came out with loads of great quotes. He probably did say your quote too but i thought it was, Winning isnt the most important thing, wanting to win is. It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.
The great Danny Blanchflower quote The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom. Never seen this one by him but its good Blanchflower, commenting on an early NASL game for US TV: “These teams can’t play.” Producer: “Accentuate positive truths rather than negative truths.” Blanchflower: “These teams positively can’t play.”
Can't believe no one has mention our heroic leader, Dr Allam. My favourite has to be... 'They can die as soon as they want'.
'The best team drew' One of mine after I got robbed playing FIFA with Junior. I'd had a few at the time.
The one I mentioned was his famous quote. It was in wrought iron over the entrance to Green Bay Packers stadium at one time. Don't know if it is still there since they expanded it. An 80,000 stadium now in a city of just over 100,000 in a metroplolitan area of 300,000. Every game sold out since Lombardi's first season in 1960 and a waiting list of over 80,000 for a season ticket means it will be over 30 years before you get one. Not a big fan of American football but Vince Lomardi was a very interesting bloke with ideas on racism and homosexuality way ahead of his time. He told all the businesses in Green Bay that anywhere which refused to serve a black Packers' player would be put off limits to the whole club and anywhere which wouldn't put all players up would not be used by them.
Blanchflower said their idea was to score the equaliser first then stop the other team doing the same.
Though not specifically about football, I always liked these two quotes from Georgie Best: I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered. I used to go missing a lot... Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World.
Other classics from George Best "If you'd given me the choice of going out and beating four men and smashing a goal in from thirty yards against Liverpool or going to bed with Miss World, it would have been a difficult choice. Luckily, I'd done both." "He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's all right." Best's view on David Beckham. "In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life." "I once said Gazza's IQ was less than his shirt number and he asked me: "What's an IQ?"
