Legendary commentator John Motson is set to retire at the end of this season. Always ready with a quirky quip and armed with an encylopedic knowledge of football, Motty has brought us commentaries for 50 years in the beautiful game. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41159991 There's so many good Motty moments. My favourite (although I've never been able to find the clip online) Is from an Arsenal game back around 1990. Motty is commentating as Lee Dixon is trying to shield the ball out for a GK whilst an attacker is trying to get the ball. Dixon uses his shoulders to lever the attacker off the ball and it goes out into touch. Dixon thinks he's won a GK and turns round to see that the ref has blown up for a foul on the attacker. The camera zooms in on Dixon and he's clearly seen to mouth to the ref 'What the **** was that for ?!!!' Motty chips in with his deadpan humour 'Well, that was for the foul actually Lee' Post your best Motty moments here :
Will be quite strange him not being around, legendary commentator. Personal favourite has to be 'Owen! This is getting better, and better, and better!!'
The thing that sticks in my mind is his continued, repeated, incorrect use of the word ironic. Other than that I think he's a bit of a dick myself, I've never really got his popularity as he's just over enthusiastic rather than genuinely knowledgeable. Besides tripping out stats and trivia of course. He's great at that.
He's sounded like your confused old uncle for the last couple of years, about time he put the microphone down.
Motson is a Legend..was listening to a radio show with him talking about the art of radio commentary. Cant remember anything in particular but enjoyed his personality accompanying a match. Cant stand some of the idiots nowadays who seem to have their head up particular teams arses...that ****er on ITV for a start.
"Villa........and still Ricky Villa .........what a fantastic run........he's scored.........amazing goal." Motty's commentary has become part of my memory of that night, despite the fact that I was actually at the Stadium shouting "Shoot you ****!" whilst Motty was speaking his words. That's probably why I never got a job commentating on the Beeb.
Dunno mate, have you ever tried applying to the BBC ? Can't dismiss your approach until you've at least applied.
