After much deliberation, here’s my Top 3. 1. Bob Bolder. Signed for £20,000 from Liverpool, went on to save our bacon on numerous occasions in his 4 seasons in the top flight of English football. An outstanding keeper. There’s only one Bobbie Bolder …how many times did we sing that ? 2. Steve Gritt. Mr Charlton in the 80s. The only player to play in all eleven positions for the club, mostly badly it has to be said, but he never gave less than 110% …and Gritty loved the club like we did. 3. Paul Miller. An idiosyncratic selection, based on my all time favourite individual performance from a Charlton player in a match . The Battle of the Bridge in the Play Off final at Chelsea in 1988. It is no exaggeration to say that Paul Miler carried the team that day, a giant in the most hostile atmosphere I can remember at one of our games (on and off the pitch).
1980's is a bit of a 'wilderness' decade for me. Early 80's I went to a few games, but memories are hazy. The big cage fences put me off going when they came along. It was a bad time for English football. A couple of years after we lost the Valley I moved away from SE7 and threw myself into work. Didn't pay much heed again until the new Millennium. I'll have a think about it...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Firmani In his three spells at Charlton 50 goals in 100 games. 32 in 55 games 6 in 10 games.
Tricky one this. Just for sheer normality, effort and loyalty Carl Leaburn. Mentions for Pender, Humphiies Peake and a great shout from Hawtry with Paul Miler
At the start of the 1980's we had Powell Hales Walsh Robinson and Walker in the team but were playing in front of crowds of about 7000. I've been looking up my Colin Cameron history book to remind myself because I was pi55ed at most games. Rambo Thomson was a favourite of Mine. Great perm too.
Some iconic centre back partnerships in the 80s. Pender & Thompson Thompson & Shirtliff Shirtliff & Pates Pates & McLoughlin McLoughlin & Miller
In the 1985/86 season Rambo managed to reach January without being suspended for the first time in his career. That lasted until the 18th January when he reached 20 points and faced suspension.
A birthday some years ago, yes. Shame my version only goes up to 1992. By the 1980's though we had a certain midfielder by the name of Alan Curbishley who must be worth a mention on this thread.
