I vaguely recall the 70s - if you remember it you weren’t there, man. I was also 10 in 1979. I do recall a few players inc Richie Bowman who my old man used to rave about. Was he any good?
Les Berry was a nice fella gave me dad a *** once. I also was given Don McCallisters boots although I’m not sure he knew much about it
I was sat outside the pub by Blackheath blue coats school years ago and Hales, Berry, Powell and a few others came in and they all smoked played darts or some weird skittles game Amd then went to the chippy in the standard. Legendary
One of the things that always surprised me is how many players cafc had in the 70s that were born in or very local to RBG or LBG back then. Les Berry Paul Walsh were born in Plumstead Dick Tydeman Phil Warman and Derek Hales were Dartford Bromley and Chatham I can’t be bothered to wiki the rest but it’s a rarity these days to have so many local born players
Paddy Powell, Derek Hales, Bob Curtis, Mike Flanagan (may have been early 80s). My two favourite early boo boy targets were Lawrie Madden and Les Berry. Like you @Typical part 2 my first trip to the Valley was in 1977.
Flanagan , Hales , Powell , Peacock , - the good old days - also Nicky Johns the goalie , all around in the 70’s
We produced three very good home grown players around the end of that decade - Paul Walsh, Paul Elliott (pre -Woke), and Robert Lee. Being Charlton, we sold all three.
Paul Walsh was one of the most exceptional players of his age group I have seen. We sold Walsh and Elliott for peanuts.
