The British Geological Society recorded a series of minor earthquakes last night in the North East of England that continually measured 3 and 1.4 respectively on the Richter scale.

Seismologists claim the earthquakes were of an unusual kind as it seemingly had two epicentres.

“We’ve never seen this before and it was quite exciting to look at the data as it came in.” said Mr. Phil Smith.

The first tremor with a magnitude of 3 began in the Newcastle area shortly after 8pm last night and was followed shortly by another tremor with a magnitude of 1.4 in the Sunderland vicinity.

About 8:45 another series of tremors began, with a magnitude 3 in Newcastle and a 1.4 in Sunderland.

“We were really confused by the symmetry of the two incidents and as we began to drive further into the data and perhaps announce a warning for the area another tremor occurred in Sunderland that registered a 1.4 without having been preceded by a tremor slightly further north.”

The sole tremor in Sunderland, an anomaly it would seem was shortly to be followed by another magnitude 1.4 a few minutes later when it once again followed the previous pattern of a magnitude 3 in Newcastle.

Close to 10 pm there was a final shake that once again followed the now standard pattern.

“We looked at survey maps and satellite imagery and were astounded that there was a fault opening between the two cities. It was only a few years ago that this fault had closed completely so in terms of movement on a geological scale; this shift is vast and quick. We’d no idea how it could have happened until an alternate source was looked at. It would seem that the quakes coincide perfectly with the occurrence of Newcastle United fans celebrating goals and a victory over Stoke.”

When asked about the Sunderland tremors Mr Smith concluded that it was linked to jaws dropping.
