As a neutral, i have to say that Newcastle is a bigger club than Villa. Newcastle have appeared in europe numerous times, i don't recall Villa doing the same.

We ain't been in Europe for a while, that's why I'm desperate for us to get back there next year. It's also worth remembering Merson played for Villa so he is bound to be favorable to them over us.

Doesn't know what he's talking about half of the time.

Ex players don't always make the best pundits. (Lawro come to mind?)

<laugh> he thinks Villa's a place? And there are only Villa fans there?

What an absolute mug he is. Glad the panel gave him some ****.

    - Merson's an idiot

    - "Size of a club" is undefinable. But you have to account for stadium, fanbase, stature, recent success and quality of the team. To argue so fiercely about it is ridiculous, it's not as black and white as saying that one club is better than another.

    - Tash, you get wound up and react to everything, even by people who arent trying to wind you up. Just ignore it.

yeah hehe, much bigger than Real madrid, barca, Bayern, Benfica, dortmund ajax, etc etc.

But for arguments sake, Celtic deffinately have a better reputation than Newcastle, but which team has the Better team, can attract better players and attract bigger crowds.

None of that stuff Paul Merson said would make any difference to what club a player signs for if it isn't in the last five years or so (or the club has built on it and is challenging at the top). It is all about the money.

his use of the fact they won the European cup is a strange one as i doubt he'd class them as a bigger club than Man city,Arsenal or Chelsea.I was hoping one of the panel would pick up on that and ask him if he thought that as well but sadly they didn't.

I was half watching it so this might be wrong, but I think it went something like this:

    - They were discussing our game vs Bolton
    - Someone brought up Ba's form
    - Someone said they'd be surprised if nobody made a move for him in January
    - Liverpool was mentioned, then Villa
    - Stelling asked why Ba would go to Villa
    - Merson says 'bigger club'
    - Sharp intake of breath from the whole panel

Then I switched the TV off cause' I had to leave. So I can't actually tell you Stelling reaction.

Look if I was sitting in a pub and someone walked upto me and asked 'who's the bigger club newcastle or Villa?' my quickfire response would be Villa (just asked this to 4 mates who are sat here and they all said Villa).

However, on reflection It would be a very hard decision - and to be fair I'm not sure if I could chose between the 2.

Jeff said he could almost hear the Newcastle fans texting and e-mailing in, presumably he's met Tash.

Flimsy nonsense from Merson in the end, theres no logical reason why anyone would move from Newcastle to Villa while we're above them in the league and playing well, while they're playing terrible football under a crap manager. Neither club is fashionable (Liverpool or Arsenal), rich (City or Chelsea) or both (Man Utd), so why make a sideways move unless he's had a massive falling out with the club or doesn't like the area?

Villa is a place, Aston in Birmingham. Referring to it as Villa though is stupid.

I think Newcastle. Much bigger fanbase and club.

Villa are more successfull traditionally, but whereas Newcaslte have flirted with actually producing a team equvillant to their size, Villa have been knowhere for the last 20 years. They had a good spell under O'Neill, but as he said the club was not capable of taking the next stage.

It depends of how you define 'big'. Fanbase Newcastle, recent success Villa. But who's higher now?!!

    I'd go Newcaslte.
