Understand why you and OLM lock these when the usual suspects start to hurl abuse and the toys come out the pram.

Maybe the problem is not so much the topic but the thick ****s with entrenched views incapable of putting over their opinions without resorting to 'plonker'. 'middle-aged loser', 'ignorant people like you', 'moron' etc when they start to lose the argument.

As you saw with that 'define racism' question, some folks are convinced what they think today is the absolute truth and those who deviate from that must be corrected, abused or ridiculed.

None so intolerant as the self-proclamied 'tolerant' eh !

So why not have a permanently open religion/politics thread into which all stray threads can be dropped to stop it bleeding over the rest of the board?

Apparently there is already a General Topic board on not606, but the guys apparently get offensive and offended when discussing religion and politics, most of the people on this board are open minded, so it would be better to talk to people on this board about politics and religion rather than one sided people

Because it's a football forum and it's doing perfectly well without having politics and religion discussed on it.

There's plenty of other boards if those are the things you want to discuss.

    Fill yer boots...

    http://www.hullcityindependent.net/?page=forum&forum_id=1

And there is of course General Chat on this board, for exactly the topics you're talking about.

    Referring to taylortiger's response:

I'm sorry but I can't understand what you are saying there.

Are you saying we're all open minded here so these issues can be discussed?

If this is the case why not just delete the thread immediately rather than let it rumble on for pages?

The short answer is that the site owner feels that there are other messageboards for such discussions.

With the best will in the world, the threads on those subjects are rarely reasoned arguments or discussions and in general tend to quickly slide into confusion and petty insults. and yes, before it's pointed out, for my sins, I can be at least as bad as others for getting sucked into them.

Even threads like this one about the possibility of discussion tend to soon head that way, so I'll leave it open for now, but I'm sat with my finger over the thread closed option.

No, people have their opinions, that's why arguments are caused, if you want to discuss religion or politics there is a General Topic board, but like I said it's crap because people get offensive and offended, so you can't have a rational discussion with them, I'd prefer to talk politics with you lot, but like OLM said, it gets out of hand so there's no point really

All three of us allow as much leeway as possible when it comes to what topics are being discussed, particularly if it's a football related topic that just happens to have the potential to get political, but we pull the plug on anything we think is moving in the wrong direction.

It's worked pretty well up to now.

Go back and look at your postings on 'Jubilee' and 'The mad old dears won'....

....and then think about your definition of tolerance.

I don't have a definition of tolerance: I'm not a walking dictionary, ffs.

I welcome open debate and challenge opinions I feel are unsound

Usually I manage to do so without having to stoop so low as to aim abuse at another poster, even though often the poster is a smug know-nowt knobhead who can't handle having to explain his reasoning in a logical and coherent way,

Like I say, bring it on etc

Sounds like this thread is getting a bit intolerant.
