http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/video/2011/nov/17/england-v-world-british-pathe-video I saw this game live on TV ( a rare treat in those days) but of course not in colour as is this extended 'cinema clip' is. This is some of the best footage I've ever seen from those days, proper camerawork compared to much of what went on then, and because the players are sooooooo good, it actually has the feel of a modern match. Can't recommend this one highly enough, they even slow mo a brilliant 'goal' by Greaves that is called back by the ref (a Scot ) because Jimmy had been fouled during his brilliant run and finish. Fortunately, Greaves pops up for a typical opportunistic winner with a few minutes to go. Notice, there's quite a lot of cheering when Law scores for the oppo, must have been a fair few Scots at Wembley that day I remember how much I loved watching this game at the time, enjoying the build up and post-match analysis, so great to relive those memories in colour
So much to savour in the game and its memories, John Bull at the end is an absolute picture Wembley looked marvellous in those days with a 100,000 inside it. The new Wembley isn't a patch on the old Wembley in its prime, as it was that day. The visual disaster that is the half empty corporate seating just kills it for me, and the twin towers > than the arch.
As I have said before, when I watch Messi I see our Jim.The difference is/was Messi seems to be in a permanent sweat unlike Greavesy, who was so casual when he was scoring he was unbelievable! How much would Jim cost today I wonder? Remember?Greavesy scored a hat trick on his White Hart Lane debut, including a goal Rooney could only dream of matching...... Funniest goal was a penalty he scored against Gordon Banks.Banks wasn't ready but Jim took it anyway and scored.....and Banksy, usually very quiet, went ballistic!!!!!
Yep, the idea of substitutes really got to the commentator. It's a shame for Greaves that one sub wasn't allowed in the 66 World Cup, as he surely would have received his World Cup medal a lot sooner than he did.
I've often wondered,if Greaves had played in the 66 WC Final, would he have won the game much earlier.........?
It's possible Smithy, but clearly Alf made the right choice for the day, just a shame, as I say, there were no subs then. Still at least Jimmy got his medal in the end
