In August 2007, Lawrie Sanchez tried to sign Sami Hyypia from Liverpool. please log in to view this image âFulham boss Lawrie Sanchez has been told to up his £1million offer for Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia. The Finland centre half, a close friend of Fulham keeper Antti Niemi, is keen to move to Craven Cottage for regular football and Sanchez is desperate for an experienced centre-back. But Sanchez does not want to match Liverpoolâs £2.5m valuation for a player who is 33 and out of contract next summer.â Actually it wouldnât have been a bad signing. Benitez gave Sami an extension to his contract and he played two more years for Liverpool before moving on to play in Germany. And while on Sanchez, despite all his failings, he didnât do at all badly for us in the transfer market that year - PS Dan Burn; amazing resemblance to Sami Hyypia
Konchesky, Baird and Hughes coming in were good business. The less said about Davis, Healy, Cook and possibly Kamara the better (although will always remeber his goal against Spurs. And City for that matter. Can't even picture Leijer let alone remember anything he might have done with us. The outs are okay with the exception of Jensen who I used to like a lot, but he went funny on us in the end so ultimately it was no great loss but I think he fell out with Sanchez over the style of play, didn't he?
Sanchez also signed Danny Murphy, who is perhaps the best signing of his brief spell. Lest that sounds like I'm being too favourable to the worst Fulham manager since Alan Dicks, t's also worth pointing out that Bairdinho was awful for all of Sanchez's time. When Roy took over he was dropped for the remainder of the Great Escape season, and ony began to rehabilitate himself the following year.
Sanchez's signings look OK until you begin to add up how much they all cost. If Jol or Hughes for that matter had been given that sort of money we would be in Europe by now.
Oh yes. How could we forget him. From Ipswich wasn't it? And Bouazza (sp?) as well didn't he? I remember seeing him dislocate his shoulder just by running down the wing.
