"Concerning" - Fally Mayulu issue raised at Bristol City
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...

Following a brilliant start to life at Bristol City, Fally Mayulu has since gone downhill, being in and out of the squad for the Robins.

When Fally Mayulu signed in the summer from SK Rapid Vienna, there was a lot of hype surrounding the young French striker, but for whatever reason, his positive performances have turned into mediocre appearances off the bench.

The 22-year-old signed for the Robins for a fee around £2.5 million and many Bristol City fans thought he would be the next big thing after his opening outings.

He began the season with a goal off the bench to give Bristol City a late lead in their 1-1 draw with Hull City and followed it up with another against Millwall.

But since then, it has only been misses for Mayulu and his Bristol City career has gone backwards.

Bristol City claim suggests "concerning" matter regarding Mayulu's recent performances
FLW's Bristol City fan pundit, James Skinner, has been displeased with Mayulu's performance levels and has surprised him in a negative way so far this season.

"Unfortunately, the one player who has surprised me from a negative aspect has been Fally Mayulu. Since he's come into the squad, on the opening day of the season, he scored a cracking goal against Hull City, but since then, we haven't really seen much from him.

"I don't know if something is going on at training, or if he hasn't settled as well as hoped. I'm really not sure what's going on, but when he comes on as a sub, he doesn't look interested, which I'm not saying he isn't, but from what I see, he doesn't.

"None of his flicks are coming off, I think it goes without saying that for a striker, goals are the key. He's not really getting anywhere near scoring a goal, and it's a bit concerning.

"I hate to look at the negatives, but he is one player who I think would produce a lot more attacking threat for us, but it's just not happening. If he hasn't settled for personal reasons, I hope he gets that sorted, and mainly for his well-being.

"I really don't know what's going on with him. I hope that in time it gets better for him, but he has been the one player I haven't seen what I thought we would from him.

Mayulu is still young and deserves time
His promise at the start of this season showed there is a player there.

Standing at 6'4, Mayulu provides a unique playing style for a striker/winger, with frightening pace but also posing a threat in the air.

The Frenchman is still only 22 and will surely be looking to overcome this obstacle and prove to the Robins faithful his worth once more.

It's harsh to judge a new signing after just nine games, but Mayulu will know he needs to get back to the standard of his opening games where he showed that threat Bristol City fans are screaming out for.

Mayulu's statistics in the Championship so far this season as per FotMob
    Goals
    2
    Dribble success %
    66.7%
    Long ball accuracy %
    100%
    Duels won
    12
He deserves time, and he should still be a player to keep your eye on.

£2.5m paid, 2 goals only, 9 games played, got to be a serious problem there, bad judgement by the recruitment department, they need to find a remedy or move the guy on, very quicklly, reocurring problem it seems, our down the rabbit hole CEO needs to sort it out.

For me it highlights a potential issue with our scouting/recruiting network.

In the 1 game he’s started, and on Saturday, his lack of pace and ability on the ball has been obvious to fans, so how did the recruitment team and scouts not pick up on this? He can finish, we know that, but as the article says, he just isn’t getting in the right place to be a threat. On Saturday, he was all over the place, he didn’t run, didn’t jump, didn’t connect with any team mates on passing. He looked like someone pulled out the stand and given a shirt. It’s a big concern.

Aside from occasionally holding the ball up and making wide runs, you could say the same about Armstrong.

He needs to be given time, players vary in how long they take to settle, bearing in mind he’s also come to a new country as well.

We also have to play to his strengths, he was bought here knowing how he plays, his strengths etc, if his way of playing doesn’t suit ours, he shouldn’t have been bought, that’s on BT, not the player.

We saw what quality has in front of goal. Recently his confidence seems shot. Give him time.

Nice to see a thread on a football forum that don’t involve political views.

Fally, I don’t think we will see the true player until late this season maybe next season. He was bought to improve so it’s over to the coaching staff now.
Got to admit I was watching him thinking **** we’ve got Diony back on Saturday. Three times he was passed to on the right to flick it out of touch.

Hopefully in time we get the player we wanted. Otherwise we will get countless comments about why didn’t we keep him when he becomes good for someone else.

This is getting tiring to beat the club with. Especially when you criticise the club not doing transfers early enough or bought ex amount of players.

When we bought him he was like a lost rabbit in headlights. He would have more than likely been out of contract when he signed before he had that golden season last year.
I make it sound that I didn’t like him, but I had high hopes for him. It didn’t work as we also bought Kasey Palmer for the same role. The issue was Ashton loved dealing with Chelsea. And I thought Palmers loan was meh.
I would have much rather we stuck with Szmodics, but after a good preseason playing lower leagues it was obvious he wasn’t ready for the championship.

I think it’s too soon to judge him.

Diony for example was given plenty of game time and never impressed (me anyway). I assume he must have impressed in training otherwise he wouldn’t have been given ANY time whatsoever. Apparently he was suffering from severe mental health issues due to homesickness - very sad, but the league is a cruel mistress and takes no prisoners.

Fally on the other hand gets hardly any game time, so of course he isn’t going to set the world on fire.
Maybe he doesn’t impress in training? Rumour has it he’s lazy? Could be utter rubbish but for whatever reason he has not been given game time under both Liam and Chris.

problem is when you get stuck in rut it becomes a circle you try to get out of it because you are in it that features strongly and you gradually get weaker.
HE NEEDS to be given a boost, but say we were 4-0 up at half time and he was brought on for second half!. likely the tendency would be to make sure if we lost it was no worse than 4-3... in top 6 ...6 points from 7th playing bottom team ... chances are bottom team would be fighting for their lives and we didnt want any score worse than 0-0!
only way is start him and either as a 2 prong or "usual target man" [ 1striker ] and hope for a couple 3 games he gets his mojo back!

Sinclair wasn’t much better. We decry our tactics when we lump high balls up to Nakhi because that’s not his strength or his game, recently we’ve been playing to his strengths and he’s been brilliant. It’s the same for Fally, give him game time and play to his strengths before making judgments. He’s had neither, so let’s not criticise him yet eh!, give the guy a chance.

when you look back at historical strikers or those that had careers lasting 10 -15 seasons [ but often never straying from leagues of 3 -4 below championship level there is a number of standouts and quite a few that had opportunities to higher level and it stuck but many failed and their career shows a sine wave of high scoring a dip then back to high scoring when you actually find one Wickipedia does help ......
eg played for 2nd divi or below for 4 or 5 seasons scoring ave 19 goals ... then 3 seasons in champs and league 1 scored total of say 15 goals then end career back below at 19+ goals a season ....... the blip 3 seasons game time / played is less than25 - 30% of that outside their ave career!
Q ... were they not good enough or did they not get opportunities?

Armstrong getting opportunities Fally not ! ?
