Delegates in the Barclays Premier League assess the behaviour of fans at matches with points being awarded for positive verbal support and recognition of outstanding play by the opposition, as well as respect for match officials and opposing fans. This season the award for the best fans has gone to Sunderland, who will receive £20,000 from the FA Charity Committee.

The Black Cats supporters finished ahead of Liverpool's and Crystal Palace's, while the winners of the past two seasons, Norwich City's fans, were fourth.

"We are very privileged to have such wonderful supporters, who back the team in huge numbers both home and away," Sunderland AFC's chief executive, Margaret Byrne, said. "They are a credit to our club and this award reinforces what we have always known – our fans are quite simply top of the league."

Well I think that puts the issue of opposition loving plastics and flask wielding spectators to bed.

I wonder where Sunderland would be in a players fair play league.

Also its nice to see that those clubs whose fans intimidate the ref to make bad decisions are so highly rated by the mysterious people who measured this made up load of bollocks. Will anyone be stupid enough to fall for this?

Do you think we scored highly in the positive support section then?

More of a case of not getting marks for applauding opposition play rather than it being a cauldron of hate towards the opposition. A lot if our fans can hardly rouse themselves to applaud their own team never mind the opposition.
If there were marks for the largest percentage of fans remaining seated or asking opposition players to,smile as they took a photo of them we would have scored more highly.

This sentence neatly summarises everything I hate about the corporate, sanitised, anodyne, smugly self-satisfied, ****bucketry that is the Premier League.

To be fair, for most of the season - the Sunderland fans were that pissed off with their own team, it probably did seem that they were recognising the brilliance of their opposition - I mean we did beat them 3 times this season (obviously including the cup)!

Why would I applaud the opposition during the game? Or the officials?

Are we not allowed to have banter with opposing fans anymore either?

Seems to me that for 3 out of the 4 categories, being at the bottom is better. Well done on that.

What a load of bollocks, why should we applaud the opposition and refrain from criticising dire referees? Like others I'm proud to be bottom of that list, it's competitive sport FFS.

I'm quite surprised by this. I'd have thought we'd be up there given the amount of people who applauded Gerrard for taking a corner and who don't even turn up when we're playing someone else.

By the way Crystal ****ing Palace third? From what I've seen they seem to hurl abuse at any opposition player close enough to hear them. Whenever someone's taking a corner they get loads of abuse.

Also a bit surprised by Sunderland, they're quite passionate and I can't picture that manifesting itself as applause for the opposition. It's usually praise or hatred for their own team isn't it?
