This is the most aggravating thing I've heard in a while. How many times have we been linked to top European talent (Aguero...) only for us to have no urgency, no clinical sense of when to give them the contract to sign and let it slip through our fingers? For years we have stalled and stalled and stall over deals, never snapped anyone up in these beginning weeks, and when the dust is clear, and the markets on.... Everyone decent has already signed for someone else. So far we've been linked with Borini, Tello and Sigurdsson (who are clearly our level) but instead of aggresively pursuing them (and they are interested) we stall and put it off. "Oh the market's on for a long time, no worries." Then we're stuck with last minute "proven British players". We're not down on the docks looking for players anymore, its a modern European market and from what i've seen in the last few years we've failed to realise that. Now if Gylfi was asking for something outrageous (90k+pw) then ok, fair move, I'll look stupid and i'll admit I was wrong. But - we haven't heard ANYTHING except for Rodger's words about transfers a few weeks ago. Why can't they let us know what's going on? Hoffenheim gave him an ultimatum a week ago, of course he's going to look for other options if we aren't giving him anything. Spurs, Chelsea, United, Arsenal have all been active already, and they are the ones we need to surpass. They're clearly doing something right, and we're doing it wrong. Why can't they just let us know how many players are on the shortlist? How many they are negotiating with? Once a week, every two weeks, whatever? I suppose on the flip side of that they've been criticised for their public demeanour during the manager saga but this is a different story.
Chelsea, United and Arsenal have the same manager in place as finished the season. Brendan stated publicly he wants to look at the players before deciding to spend. Sounds sensible to me. Regards Spurs, they're being linked with a mass exodus, so they can keep that publicity, as far as I'm concerned...
By the time BR has looked at the players properly though the window will be closed effectively and we will be stuck with downing for another year.
On the up side of that, he can't be as poor as last season. Nor can Carroll. Henderson should improve too. We should get some good service from our young players coming through if Rodgers keeps to the philosophy he showed at Swansea.
Silence is a good thing as far as a football club is concern, let's not wish for public washing of dirty laundry eh? I'd rather they tell us when they have actually signed someone than give us random snippets with the majority not coming true
Nothing seems to quote a source for this 'Spurs signing Gylfi' rumour. Got mentioned by talkSpurt this morning, then by the afternoon everyone is reporting it. I just wonder if everyone is copying the TalkSpurt report as if it is news. If so, its as reliable as Caughtoffside...
Yep, I was just reading the BBC report (which doesn't read great for a Liverpool fan) but there is no sign of a quote anywhere...
TalkSpurt interview - its just the first 1'30" to listen to. Nothing about a source, just that 'Spurs are in a strong position'. Apparently, playing for a team without a manager is not a deterrent for a player like Gylfi, as he's a true professional (or a merc, to give the correct term for a player who'll sign up for a team regardless of who the manager might be...) If its true he can be swayed simply by money, and not knowing who the manager is doesn't bother him, he might not be a such a good fit for us anyway, as Rodgers is trying to sell a philosophy to the fans and players.
That tends to be the way these days. One low ranking media outlet reports it, another slightly better one picks up on it because they've nothing much else to report, and it just blossoms from there until it arrives on the BBC's doorstep. I can't remember the details, but last summer a story that was started on twitter purely to bait Sky Sports with was actually then picked up on and reported by their news channel! 'Sky sources' are every man and his dog.
I honestly don't care if we do or do not sign Sigurdsson. There are plenty of sweets left in the box. In our particular circumstances it would appear to be rather rash to go out now and buy 'talent' when our new manager does not really have a clue as to the real abilities and failings of the squad that we already have. If we have one area that could be addressed at the moment it would be to increase the quality of our wide players. We already have plenty of midfield options!
Nice post St. Or to put your words into layman's terms if he doesn't want to join our club for footballing reasons **** him and his wage demands.
Twitter, Facebook, etc certainly make it easier for so-called journalists to get a story nowadays. I 100% believe that caughtoffside was setup by a journalist. I know it was setup by a football fan and advertised on 606 with prizes for the most viewed pieces etc. This then gives a newspaper or news channel a source deeming them no longer liable for slander
Accuracy is very important - a website can't slander - that will be libel, that! I wonder if Youtube is slander?
to be fair, I don't know what this is. how can rodgers just jump in with signings when he hasn't even had the full squad to train with? what's the point in making rash, potentially very expensive decisions especially when there are potentially two ex-loanees who could have a role to play? i think we have to be realistic and next season could be tough, it is still a transition phase for rodgers to build a squad which fits with his style. who knows, things could be ok but surely the squad needs proper assessment for the long term instead of jumping in with no idea. it is frustrating when things seem to be happening at other clubs but surely this is a long term project of at least 2 to 3 years so therefore needs time.
I actually suspect that the defence of "someone else said it was true and I believed them" is pretty weak. No-one outside of government tries to get away with that kind of defence. Niger uranium forgeries September Dossier
Yeah, and if any of the transfer stuff on caughtoffside, goal, bleacherreport and any other such sites actually turned out to be correct, they wouldn't be sniggered at like they are. You'd think they'd maybe stop posting ridiculous stories in an effort to improve their reputation.
It's all about mentions & site hits they can show their advertisers though. Crap draws people in; even if it's to laugh.
