Selby, much to my surprise, is in North Yorkshire. It's probably common knowledge to most, I just always considered it in East Yorkshire as it's a stones throw from Goole. Barmby on the Marsh is also in the East Riding, and that's 4 miles from Howden. Which is near Gilberdyke. Which is near South Cave. Where is the border, then?
The border is shown on maps It's quite tricky to describe it on here! Surely everyone knows Selby is in N Yorks...on account of it being in N Yorks?
I'm surprised how few people know that Selby has it's own system for measuring the passage of time. Particularly as most perishable goods make reference to the Selby date on their packaging,
I always assumed it was in East Yorkshire, considering how close Howden and Goole are. I usually go past it on the M62, which to me runs from East through West Yorkshire, I didn't realise there was a bit of North Yorkshire to drive through! I play golf at Spaldington a lot, that's literally a 2 minute drive and it's in East Yorkshire (I think). Usually there's a sign when you enter a new county? I know it sounds asinine, it just threw me a bit when I saw it on the map.
I've never really thought about it, although I know where it is Isn't Spaldington Golf Club called Boothferry?!
County borders are weird anyway. They seem to start off compact in the south east, and get gradually bigger as you move away from London. It's as though who ever was tasked with creating them was either getting close to their deadline, or just thought "**** this, it's boring". please log in to view this image
See maybe it's my poor judgement, but looking at that map, I always thought the M62 runs closer to the river and the southern point on that map, where Selby is, seems rather high up. Or is the M62 just further north than I figured?
Ridings were established in 875 AD by the Danes when they created the Kingdom of Jorvik. Parts of Lancashire were part of the West Riding. The Ridings were all abolished in the 1970s and then Humberside was replaced by the reintroduction of the East Riding in the 1990s. Selby was in the West Riding until 1974, so it's really neither East nor North Yorkshire.
Going west, it switches from East to North Yorkshire around Wressle. My office address is York, East Yorkshire, places like Market Weighton and Pocklington also have York postcodes but are in East Yorkshire. I quite often have customers visiting York and call me to say they're thinking of popping in and are rather baffled when I tell them I'm 40 minutes away.
