Newcastle centre-half Taylor was called into the senior squad yesterday, along with Steven Caulker and Joleon Lescott, to offset the growing defensive crisis ahead of the World Cup double-header with San Marino and Montenegro after Gary Cahill pulled out with a knee problem and Rio Ferdinand withdrew from the squad.

Taylor, 27, has been in a squad once before under Steve McClaren, but said his chances of progressing under Capello were wrecked because the Italian did not even know what position he played.

“Our gaffer Alan Pardew went to some event and Capello was there. Alan said, ‘You should come up and see Taylor’, but Capello replied, ‘I’m all right for midfielders’.

“That did a lot for my confidence. It was almost back to the feeling I had when we got relegated.”

Taylor’s hopes of featuring against either San Marino or Montenegro are limited, but he said: “I’ve always thrived on competition at Newcastle, where I had seven centre-halves ahead of me before I made my debut.

“I love that kind of competition and I would love the opportunity to play, but the quality means it’s going to be very difficult.

“But I would run through brick walls to play for my country. It would be the proudest moment in my career and a dream come true.”

Just read that story on F365. Just about sums up how valued Newcastle and their players are by everyone at Lancaster gate!

Sums up Capello. Didn't like the weather, but thought the money was good.

Good luck to Taylor anyway, he deserves some recognition.

Yes and even then, sums up Capello. Didn't know the club had 2 Taylors, and didn't know which one was the better one.

Would think you'd give him a go against San Marino at least, though he's as good as anyone they have available for either

Crapello didn't know his arse from elbow and shouldn't have had the job in the first place. The idiotic old ***gots at the FA that gave him the job should have all been sacked. They know SFA about football and spend all their time quaffing Champers and caviar. All jolly old boys together.

Liked Capello and not surprised he didn't know how Saylor was or mistook him for Ryan, he only manages about 18 games a season. Fingers crossed for the 10th time, he has turned the corner! Still worried about the impact of this call up on his fragile fitness!

It's once again a case of Southern bias.

I'm no Capello fan, but I think when you look at his record, it's pretty incredible.

The World Cup aside, the results England got with him in charge were impressive.

Statistically, he was the best we've ever had.

Look at the job he's doing for Russia now!

No doubting he's looking for a big pay-day all the time, but when you consider how genuinely talented the man is, it's fair enough really!

Steven Taylor simply cannot stay fit long enough to complain about his international call-ups - it's a shame for the lad, he's got a big heart and genuinely loves playing for his country at any level.
He's been unfortunate so much in that there is an abundance of quality CB's in recent years.

As I say, I think if his injury record had been better, he may well have challenged more and we wouldn't be looking to has-beens like Rio Ferdinand! <doh>

I can understand how Taylor feels about being snubbed by Capello because I went through exactly the same thing.

When he selected Downing for his squad he had scored no goals for his club, had no assists and scored 1 own goal, I had exactly the same record except I hadn't scored any own goals and never got a look in.

I think my reservations about Mr Capello are more than justified.

Outstanding coach who was simply hamstrung by England not being good enough. God forbid we admit though and actually do something about it...............

Saylor has never been worthy of a call up so quite why he's getting his knickers in a twist about this minor issue is beyond me. You have to actually play (and to a high level) and stay fit, to have a justified reason to expect your national manager to take an interest in you. Take the black and white specs off and you soon realise Saylor hasn't. In all honesty the southern bias thing with regards to the national squad makes me laugh. Nolan, Barton, etc would all have been lucky to be picked. We haven't had the players good enough!
