A crackin' result for the young 'uns. Here's hoping the same result materialises when the real teams meet.

    Smashed them good!

We've got some good youngsters waiting in the wings, I was very impressed with them.

What does 'winning a Derby' mean? I'm not sure I recall this phenomenon.

Always nice to win anywhere, Derby aren't doing too badly at the moment but they've got a good way to go before playing in the PL.

    1 Leicester 26 20 57
    2 QPR 26 15 52
    3 Burnley 26 19 51
    4 Derby 26 16 47
    5 N Forest 26 13 44
    6 Reading 26 9 41

Report from the official SAFC Website.

Youngsters exit Cup after derby defeat.

Sunderland’s under-18 side were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup at the hands of local rivals Newcastle United after a frustrating evening on Tyneside.

A hat-trick from Magpies front man Jonathyn Quinn was enough to ensure United’s route into the next round of the competition on a chilly night at St James’ Park.

After forcing extra time at Portman Road in the first round of the competition against Ipswich Town back in December, the under-18s’ reward for their penalty shoot out win was a Tyne-Wear derby.

The game started in typical north east derby fashion, very competitively with both teams chasing every ball.

However, it was the hosts who had the better of the opening period as they dominated in possession and were by far the better team.

Sunderland keeper Maksymilian Stryjek was tested early in the game by Quinn, who proved to be a thorn in Sunderland’s side for the rest of the evening.

The stopper turned away his first shot beyond the post and later denied the striker from the edge of the box.

Sunderland’s first chance fell to Lynden Gooch, after a clever run from Rees Greenwood set up the young American from 15 yards out but his feeble shot was easily gathered by Freddie Woodman.

There was added bite in the tie on the half hour mark when Tom Beadling was only booked for a dangerously late challenge on United skipper Alex Gilihead.

The resulting free kick was smashed into the Sunderland wall before the towering Stryjek plucked a second piece out of the air with ease.

Sunderland enjoyed a decent spell of play just after the half hour mark, with captain Martin Smith leading by example in the middle.

He unleashed Tom Robson down the middle but unfortunately his weak shot was fired straight at keeper Woodman.

Moments later a chance fell to Stinson inside the box but the youngster could gain control to get a shot away before he was dispossessed
    .
The visitors were left ruing missed chances when their rivals took the lead right on the stroke of half time as Quinn coolly swept home Rolando Aaron’s low cross.

United picked up where they left off after the restart, Quinn doubled his side’s lead 10 minutes into the second period as he bundled the ball over the line after Sunderland failed to clear inside the box.

After netting their second the hosts oozed confidence and none more so than scorer Quinn.

The youngster completed his hat-trick 20 minutes from time with almost a carbon copy of his opening strike; he picked up Jamie Sterry’s low cross from the right and stabbed the ball over the line.

Armstrong piled more misery on Ged McNamee's side as he pounced on sub Andrew Nelson’s back-pass to make it 4-0 to the hosts on a night to forget for the young Black Cats.
The final scoreline flattered the Black Cats as it could easily have been six or seven to the strong and cohesive hosts. All in all a fair result, but, at least the team were able to have the privilege of playing at St James’ Park
