Standing supporters, small crowds but full of euthoria, the odd smoke flare, a wet November weekend, little non-league clubs, part time players, factory workers, teachers, giant killings, all come to make the FA Cup famous. Any true supporter that watched the events unfold this weekend, whether at a game, on TV, listening to the radio, or just read the newspaper, will know that this is the trophy closest to most football supporters hearts. In the modern day of Premier League Elite, this was our weekend, one of the greatest events of the year. Even my own team, Gillingham FC, getting stuffed at League Two Stevenage, where old players come back to haunt you (Whelps). While Ex Gills and League Two Championship winner Deon Burton was unsuccessful in helping lowly Worcester take on the might of Sheffield United, and not going without a mention is MadDog's Barnet turning over once Premiership side Blackpool, while another ex Prem side Wigan were completely annihilated at Bury. What a great start to the campaign with Salford City turning over Notts County on the Friday night and the Salford number 11 goal was of what FA Cup boyhood dreams were made. Yes, everyone is vying for the cream tie, but this is where non-league players embarrass their well paid league one and league two counterparts. Just ask teams like Bristol Rovers who fell at home to Chesham with odds of 10-1 against. Forest Green turning over AFC Wimbledon, far removed from the days of the Crazy Gang. Just goes to show heart, passion and energy will always overcome money in a 90 minute one off game. The third round will bring the big money spinners and who ever you support, we will all be cheering on the one little club to beat the almighty. That's why we love the FA Cup.
