One of the best days of the season when no one is actually playing, first round draw.

Some great names are in the hat, for the 7pm draw, and supporters of the 'little clubs' will be glued to the TV/radio.

I always try to get to one of the matches involving one of the NE clubs or, failing that, one of my local teams ...... great crack.

Tonight's draw includes Hartlepool, Carlisle, Gateshead, Spennymoor & Blyth Spartans.
One of the best cup runs I've ever been on was with Blyth Spartans which ended up with us being locked out of a totally crammed SJP.

A 3rd round Sunderland away game at Mansfield, Notts County, Sheff Utd would be great for me.

I was at that Blyth match as well, well, we got locked out. Wrexham wasn't it?

I play golf with the captain of the Spartans team every year, John Waterson. Cracking bloke.

It was mate, fantastic cup run that was.

We'd gone down to Wrexham and the locals were totally overwhelmed by the travelling support

There were thousands of green & white scarves as well as loads of Sunderland, Newcastle ....... all mixed in together in that big open end!

Blyth were robbed of victory by a ****e refereeing decision but at least they got a big payday at SJP.

Was that the game where the corner flag fell down?

That's the one, right in front of us.

At the end of the match the Wrexham supporters went on the pitch to celebrate, got carried away & came up to the away end to taunt us.

The Blyth supporters started to scale the fences and Wrexham legged it out of the ground <laugh>

I've still got a Spartans shirt with the Viz logo on.
Bit of a collectors item now I believe.

You're on a winner today mate. You started a thread and there's no "offensive" tags appeared yet. Mind you, it'll only be a matter of time before you get "owned" by the gc squad again. <laugh>.

    Bunch of tossers.

Hell of a turnout mate <ok>

I also 'remember' going to Elland Road to see Blyth play Hull in some kind of 2nd or 3rd replay.

The memory is hazy though, I also followed Enfield, in the cup, during that period as my Father-in-Law was from there.

Wasn't Ron Guthrie playing for Blyth that year? A lot of happy memories for him, I'll bet.

You're right about "great names" Boots. Just in my lifetime, I've seen three of those teams win the Cup (Portsmouth, Coventry and MK Dons) and two others as losing finalists (Preston and Luton). That's without going back any further. Bury were the first team to win the cup twice in the 20th century (about 1900 and 1904 off the top of my head). And the FA Cup before this one was manufactured in Bradford (somewhere around 1908-1910). Bradford City went to Wembley in the first year and brought it back again! And you could write a book on the stories I've missed out. Brilliant competition, this one.

Shildon are in the draw too. I think they're the lowest ranked team left in the competition.

Can't believe you've left Shildon out bud. One of my locals and the lowest ranked team left in the draw, a few of my mates were at the game on Saturday and they nearly pulled off a win. Hate the replay rule in the FA Cup.

I did look and wan't sure if it was 'our Shildon' or some imposter from Gloucester.

That's why I said 'Tonight's draw includes .....' to cover me tracks but I'll consider mesel busted.

I always hope for a really tough draw in the cup - at least that way it takes away the possibility of being humiliated. I'm still haunted by Ronnie Radford and fed up of seeing that bloody goal. They showed it again tonight!!!

Can you imagine how a PL side would react, these days, if they were asked to play on that pitch <laugh>

Not just the pitch, but the standing fans held back by a skimpy rope. I think that's partly why we don't see so many upsets anymore. Those pitches and grounds really were a great leveller. I think its a shame those days have gone now.
