Ooops - we're off to Sunderland. Don't remember us playing them in the Cup before, but could be wrong. [Always supposing we win the replay of course]
Stadium of Light is a favourite ground - Last 5 visits to Wearside DWDDW, albeit when we were a Prem team. COYW!
Could have been worse, but could have been a lot more exciting too. If we get past Wolves it'll be a tough one.
Looking at the team Sunderland sent out against Leeds at the weekend, it was a pretty strong looking team so Poyet may be looking for a cup run this season, wouldn't expect him to play a weakened side against us (if we beat Wolves!) Interestingly, Wolves play on Sunday this weekend so will only have 1 day rest before playing us on the Tuesday, a slight advantage for us? Wolves might look to rest a couple of players having played so recently. Cup runs are a bonus but would really like to beat Wolves and get a crack at Sunderland.
I bought tickets for the home game against Forest, on the 24th. When is the 4th round? The 24th. Needless to say it won't be a complete disaster, on a personal level, if we go out.
I was wrong. We beat them 4-1 at their place on 4th January 1969. Like this year they were in the top Division - with some grand names on the team sheet; Colin Todd, Ian Porterfield, Bobby Kerr, Dennis Tueart - and us in the second. I suspect my memory lapse was on purpose. !968/69 was definitely a season to forget; Bobby Robson given the premature “heave ho” as manager, Malcolm McDonald prematurely transferred, and dear old Frank Large trying his best .. please log in to view this image … but then who could replace Allan Clarke, also sold prematurely … no, sorry, the rest has become a blank …
Cottager I remember that game. We were winning 4-1 at half time. I was with my dad at Chelsea and when they did the half times the announcer said they had rung up to check the result was right!! From memory the main scorer with at least 2 goals was a big red headed Irishman called Brendan Mullan who hardly ever played before or after that game. But you were right about Frank Large!! - what a pudding!
Fred, you‘ve got a better memory than me. I can‘t remember the Irish lad for the life of me. For the curious why it was such an awful season despite that inspiring 4-1 Cup win away to Sunderland, and anyone else also wanting to blank out the memory ........ We had been relegated from the top Division the previous season after changing managers in the New Year. In season 1968/69 Bobby Robson with only 1 win in his first 7 games was sacked and former player Bill Dodgin appointed as manager. In a demonstration of support and optimism that we'd bounce stright back-up to the top flight, the Club Board announced in the programme for the first match that; ”.. we have decided not to fly flags of Second Division clubs this season. We didn’t think it worth buying a set for just one season” How right they were. We went straight down to Division 3. Not one for coincidences, but ……………… [Just joking!]
According to the web Brendan went on to play 2 more games for us before moving to Millwall. That season was dreadful really - I remember being excited about Cliff Jones coming from Spurs - but he didn't work out either
Fred, the Club have posted an article with your very own Fred about the game. Link - http://www.fulhamfc.com/news/2015/january/23/roker-park-upset
Thanks Cottager it is good to the old stager is still doing a bit for the club. Fred wasn't the most talented of footballers, but he had heart like a lion and could show modern footballers the meaning of loyalty
