Instead of the current format, with F1 as a pretty much standalone series, would it be better, with regards to increasing competition etc., to have a promotion/relegation system as in football? GP2 could act as the Championship/div. 2, whatever you want to call it, and I'm not too sure what the third tier equivalent would be. the top three/two/even one team(s) would be relegated and promoted depending on grid positions throughout the year. This would make sure that only teams capable of finishing reasonably highly (ahem, Lotus, Virgin and HRT!) would stay in this prestigious, top tier of motorsport, and other teams can develop in lower leagues and therefore only mov on when they're ready. Thoughts?
Would cost too much for the most of the GP2 teams. Anyway most of them are feeder teams for the the bigger F1 teams anyway.
It's a nice idea, but considering the amount of money involved in stepping up to F1, it would never happen due to the risks of injecting so much cash only to be relegated the next season. GP2 has the same car and engine for all teams, whereas F1 does not. Therefore, being promoted up to F1 would mean millions of extra cash would need to come from somewhere just to put a car together. Plus you only have 10 events (albeit each with 2 rounds) in GP2 whereas you'd have double the travelling in F1. Plus you've got extra staff, improvements in headquarters facilities etc. Basically there's just too much of a gulf between the 2 series. As for lower series being promoted to GP2, I'm afraid I have very little experience and knowledge in that area and so couldn't comment.
I think a league system would work well but it will have to come along with budget caps to keep it sustainable between F1 > GP2 > GP3. you could do it with the drivers too so it would keep us with the best 26 drivers (full grid) and the worst get relegated
wouldn't work either way, as the car regulations are different, and the drivers of the worst car would be relegated rather than the worst driver. The only way would be to have an off the shelf car, even then whoever has the most money will probably win. There are very few racing formula that are actually a level playing ground (if any). Consider that some Cadet karters (parents) spend more on bearings than some of their competitors do for a whole season racing.
