I have been reading a thread on Saintsweb 'Our match of the season is next Saturday', there is a lot of negativity being written about our chances and some couldn't care less about winning the cup.

For me football is about one day winning a major trophy and this year we couldn't be in a better position for it.

Best chance in a while this year, not much to play for in the league and the big teams are all playing eachother with all of them still having loads to play for in the league and Europe. Trouble is we've got to actually beat Sunderland, although I spose we could draw twice and take them to penalties.

I'm focussed on the League, but yeah it would be great to win the FA Cup.

Surely Sunderland have to run out of steam in this game. They've reached one cup final already and they don't have a deep squad. I think we want it more than them as we don't really have anything else to play for this season.

To be honest the FA Cup is now my number 1 priority this season. We are very safe in the league.

I am a veteran of May '76, it was the best day of my life so far, I could go through that again, one more time given the opportunity.

I do actually care, now. Normally I don't give the slightest toss about cups, but our league season is heading for a pretty uneventful finish so yeah, I'd love to see us win the cup.

Am dreading playing Sunderland. If we get through I will really fancy our chances.

This. Last year, I was not the least bit unhappy when we crashed out because we had a relegation fight on our hands. This season there's not a tonne to play for in the league, so we might as well go for a little cup glory.

Go for the cup every time. No-one remembers the team who finishes sixth in the Premier League, everyone remembers who won the cup.

Do you think Lambert will be allowed to take all the penalties in a shootout?

    ;)

We have a chance of winning the FA cup. League table suggests there are a number of teams better than us, but we have a strong first eleven which are capable of beating just about anyone in a single game (except Chelsea :)).

I don't agree with the view that the FA cup is of no consequence. I remember 1976 and 2003, as well as the JPT more recently. All 3 days to savour and remember with pride. Even if we were struggling in the league I would prefer a strong team as winning breeds a winning mentality.

Have to agree with this. A couple of things were different though. Firstly, the cup was still massive back then, possibly bigger than the league title as it was pretty much the only live football that was shown on TV.

Also, of course, we were the massive underdogs and everyone (outside of Portsmouth and Manchester) wanted us to win but nobody (outside of Southampton) thought it was possible.

Walking round London after the game it was like I was personally responsible for the result. People would come out of pubs, taxi drivers would stop etc etc all to say well done, brilliant.

And then the drive back home and all that followed. And I was just about the right age too, old enough to drink and young enough not to be too cynical.

One thing now though, is that people are saying what a great chance we have of winning it, well obviously Saturdays game will be tough and then it largely depends on the draw. Whatever happens we will have to beat one of the top teams to win it which we haven't done so far.

Have to say the cup has lost some of the appeal to me. I use to get really up for it on cup days but now it's some what lost it's spark. Don't get me wrong I want to win it, but it's just if we don't I don't really mind.

Oh, man. I was 15 in 1976, and for various personal reasons, none of which look like good ones from here, I didn't go to Wembley that day. I've been regretting it ever since, though I still have some great memories of that May and the following long, hot summer.
