By Alex Varney | Wednesday, April 11, 2012 Graham Bean has blasted the Football Association’s “ridiculous decision” to uphold Shaun Derry’s red card against Manchester United. The former FA compliance officer now defends clubs and players against disciplinary charges and represented Derry in his bid to get the sending off during his side’s 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford overturned. The QPR midfielder appeared to make minimal contact with United winger Ashley Young, who was also in an offside position, but that did not stop the FA from ruling his one-match ban must stand. And that has angered Bean, who told talkSPORT: “It’s about time the FA comes out and gives explanations as to why they reach these ridiculous decisions. “We gave the FA a get out of jail card yesterday because we based the appeal on two fronts. First of all the sending off was wrong but, secondly, within the FA’s rules there is an opportunity for them where there are exceptional circumstances to say that the penalty was excessive. “What we said to them was that, even if you think the decision to send him off was right, given the circumstances, ie this was an offside goal, then these are exceptional circumstances. So, the FA could have still backed the referee by claiming the decision was right but saying, ‘yeah, we recognize there are exceptional circumstances and therefore the ban hasn’t got to be imposed’. Yet they even failed to do that. “In my time working in football I’ve seen some weird and wonderful decisions by the FA and this is up there among the top three or four of them. I think it is a travesty they reached this decision." Nice to get some deeper information from the people behind the appeal and on top of that having a close knowledge of how the FA works.
Well the good news is that it was not Mr Bean or Jim Bean defending us, but good old Graham! Though on reflection maybe Mr Bean could have got a better result!
He has obviously bean through it all before but his comments are half baked. He is assuming the old farts at the FA even have a pulse? With this broad brush approach to all appeals he might as well done a runner half way through the proceedings. He could at least have given them a black eye or two before leaving.
When I saw the title I honestly thought, 'What the hell has Marcus Bean got to do with this?', stupid but there you go.
i don't particularly like qpr, but i must support you on this decision. totally ludicrous outcome and just goes to show what the f.a. thinks of us "little clubs". does anyone believe the outcome would have been the same if it was united appealing against a red in the exact same circumstances? no, of course not, the red card would have been overturned.
