All very sadly true BUT..... if we don't try and keep up with the others, the gap is going to get wider and wider, I'd love us to win every game, but I am also looking forward to seeing some very good players, I won't say "World class" because most of them aren't. Still very talented though!
But can we? Depends on what 'others' you are talking about I guess. If you mean WBA, Stoke, West Ham, Southampton (clubs of a similarish size today) then perhaps we can, for a while at least. But if you mean the 'others', why bother? It's never going to happen to the likes of Norwich or indeed any team outside of the media elite.
I meant those in and around our means, football is all about money these days, if you can't beat'em......
If push came to shove, I suppose I could live with PL football if we were a regular mid-table side, one that finished reasonably comfortably above the dreaded 36-40 point cut-off (i,.e. 42-45 points). At least we would have been winning enough games (or not losing so many) to make it a bit more pleasurable.
I think the author of the article has grim memories of our most recent season in the top flight - as do most of us I'm sure that under AN we'll not be **** scared to try and compete and impose ourselves on lower / mid teams, whereas Hughton had the squad terrified of it's own shadow! And any points at all - home or away, against the perceived elite top 6/7 will be icing on the cake. And lets not forget we did beat Arsenal and ManUre under CH, so with the right mindset, all things are possible
It's always great to beat one of the so called big sides but certainly next season I would rather we beat Bournemouth twice than victories against Chelsea and Man United. We need to be taking points off those that will in all probability be fighting it out with us in the lower half of the table
An excellent article Cromer and I agree with the thrust of the article entirely. It is a paradox indeed that the PL is somewhere you feel you have to be but are realistic enough to appreciate the shortcomings whereas the Championship was a thrilling adventure with numerous twists and turns woven through unpredictability. That said when we played Boro at Wembley did I want us to win? Of course I did and I was jumping around for the two goals and watching the clock from that point on. As we have seen through the FIFA story (and God knows where that will end) money has ruined the game totally and it is not as enjoyable or as even as it was 30 years ago. The sad thruth is that what we had will never return and we either have to embrace the new era or walk away. For all of my moaning (and believe me that amounts to a lot on this subject) I haven't walked away yet and cannot see me doing it in all honesty. I guess on that basis millions of fans probably feel roughly the same. What a shame!
When top (?) players can command weekly wages of circa £250k, you know it's gone mad. That same £250k would probably finance a club like Stockport or Rochdale for the best part of a season, give them the stability to carry on, fulfill their fixtures, bolster their squads, etc. So we've traded the paper napkins of the championship for the crisp, laundered linen serviettes of the Premier League as we now dine at the top table. For better or worse (I still can't make my mind up). I want to see us against the very best there is, but I also quite like to see us at the right end of the league table, too. I guess clubs of our stature can't possibly have both - although we did in 1992/3, before the oligarchs and sheikhs skewed things irretrievably
Yep, and don't forget that tinpot club down the A140 managed to win the league, FA Cup and UEFA Cup back in the day too. I know that's hard to believe but I'm one of the few on here old enough to remember those dark satanic days . Well I remember the cup wins they had anyway even I'm not old enough to remember their title win I was just a babe in arms
Yep your final comment hits the nail fair and square on the head Cromer. it was kind of O.K. until the stupidly rich got involved and made the PL a toy to play with for their amusement and with it went our history and pure love of the game. Having said that though, I would hate it if a sheikh were to buy Norwich City. I am proud of the club as it is and don't want it taken over by someone who has no heart felt interest in it. I don't know how Citeh fans sleep at night, they have yet to win a PL title, they have just bought two.
Regarding the cups, one word solves your question Cromer, Robson! You have to hand it to him, he was an all time great and I say this as a true Canary.
That's the beauty of being a Norwich fan though. We'll get the highs of promotion runs, made all the more sweeter due to our experience of the agony of relegation too. We'll probably see both again in the next few years but if the consequence of relegation is another thrilling season of top of the table footy then I'll not be too down.
As an expat, the PL is the place I want City to be. For purely selfish (?) reasons. I can actually watch the matches on tv as all will be on one channel or another in the far east.
The Premier League is bought every year. Nobody wins it without a lot of serious finance. I'm sure they sleep fine, I know I would.
