Kenwyne has scored something like one goal in his last 15 games, and the Bent man is hardly hitting the net with any frequency,so,was Steve right to get rid of these two?? In my opinion, yes.Thoughts, lads, please!!
i think jones would have been a great foil for gyan but you cant have everything i dont miss either of em!
"Meanwhile, Ricardo Fuller becomes Stoke sub number three as the goal-shy Kenwyne Jones is hauled off." Quote from the BBC live update thread just now. Says it all for me.
KJ is one of them players when on his day he is unplayable, unfortunately for him, his days are very few and far between. If the miserable twat at Stoke can't get him to work then who can? We're well shot of him thanks f**k.
Let's buy him back as a Central Defender. Bruce is dying to get his hands on him in that role! Lord knows we need help there...again.
Wrath makes a good point. Didn't Bruce try to convert Jones to central defence one summer? It's been done before. Does anyone remember a big nugget of a striker we signed from Rotherham or somewhere - Dave Watson they called him? Ended up playing for England at central defence, and the first six games he played were clean sheets! The problem with Jones is he's still kidding himself he's a striker, and wouldn't listen. I think we're well rid. With Bent, I wonder how much Capello is f...ing with his head. I remember as a kid reading an interview with a Newcastle coach. He said "Jackie Milburn always toe-ends it. Technically, he's all wrong. But how do I tell Jackie Milburn how to kick a ball? When you've a player like that, you just leave him alone". Bent plays on instinct, and, let's be frank, his instinct is pretty damn good. Trying to make him into something else might be exactly the wrong thing to do. If Capello's messing with the lad's head, it probably was right to let him go. Not that we could have stopped him if he wanted to go. But I think Capello might just be destroying everything that was right with him.
Jones started off as a Central defender and was changed to a striker at southhampton. The one and only area we miss Jones, is his defending of set pieces!
I still say we should have tried Jones in midfield, I'm pretty sure that was his position when younger. I said all along about Bent when he was scoring for us (all goals most welcome however he got them) too often he missed sitters which could have put the game out of reach of the opposition. We are talking 2 or 3 clear cut chances that he fluffed badly most games. Oh how I got slated for daring to say so on 606 ! Bent scored a goal in a game so was untouchable, makes no difference if his following misses meant we lost the said game.
All stikers play the percentage game. They just glimpse an opening and have a pop. Some go in, some don't. No one remembers the five a game Lofthouse, Lineker, Shearer or Phillips missed. They only remember the times the net bulged. Bent was no different. The bottom line is Drogba scored 28 with a title-winning Chelsea, Rooney got 26 with Man. U. and Bent got 24 with a bottom-seven side. You can hardly grumble at that. What Calm's saying is that Bent has stopped scoring much at all, and, whilst I doubt that will remain true till the end of the season, it still makes me wonder if Capello isn't doing more harm than good with him.
I understand what your saying CB, Bents tally will be lower still as he isn't first choice penalty taker at Villa. And lets be fair the players you mentioned weren't renowned for missing tap ins either. Bent missed numerous sitters whilst here. To me Bent is like his new team mate Agbonlahor, they need too many chances to get one goal.
Speaking of ex-strikers, I got a real shock when I saw a familiar looking bloke holding aloft the Carling Cup on Sunday evening. It took me a split second delay before it registered: SKP Had forgotten about him being at Brum but delighted to see him pick up a winner's medal. It's surprising how many fans bemoaned the departure of KJ but we seem to have forgotten about DB in the space of a week or so.
Always remember Reidy saying one of the things that made KP so good was he did not let a miss bother him - with KJ his head would go down and he's stop playing if he missed, which he does often.
I might get lambasted for saying this, but,in my opinion,KP was a class above both Jones and Bent..both on and off the field.
Kenwyne and Bent haven't exactly set their clubs alight but they've gone to clubs who don't play the same way as we do. Both those players had their faults for us but both scored regularly for us as we played to their strengths. Still think SB was wrong getting rid of Jones as for Bent money talked end of.
I loved it when Kenwin walked on the pitch, was waiting for that bit of magic, that HE is capable of, but more dissapointed than elated, so yes and goodbye. as for Barren Dent,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,TA RA, ,,,,,,,, Nobody bigger than SAFC except the fans, who are "SAFC"
