i am nominating a suggestet shrews team for gt to put out against evesham. i have nominated the team purely for discussion to take our minds of this long sodden sodding summer . i accept brickbats and any other currency. town at present have a squad of 21 so any one not shown is on the bench, and all will get a game. gk weale backs grandison jones, jacobson m/field taylor summerfield purdie wright. up front gornell morgan assisted by doble ok tell me where i am wrong, i repeat it is only a discussion point, but my team will certainly stuff the gas, any one can stuff the gas. floreat salopia
3-4-3 or 3-4-1-2 interesting formation there AJ I would possibly think that the squad will evolve into something like this: 4-5-1 Weale Grandison Jones Hazell Jacobson Wildig Hall Summerfield Richards Wright Gornell The tough area to get a start is central midfield with Asa Hall, Luke Summerfield, Matt Richards, Wildig and Rob Purdie all battling it out to get a place. This led me to think that as we have Hall who has 'Box to Box midfielder' tatooed on his nape, Summerfield who is obviously here to start games and is attacking minded and Richards who deserves his place (but is he the defensive midfield player we need) Admittedly do Taylor/Wildig and Wright deserve their places? Wright surely does based on his goals and some assists but if Paul Parry is coming in then we might have major competition - unless GT is going to use him as a striker.
Naturally, I would assume Turner will stick with a 4-4-2 over the course of next season, but it is hard to tell. Some of his comments suggest he might be thinking of a 4-5-1, but they are open to interpretation. Poor performances last season with a 4-5-1 combined with excellent 4-4-2 results against Derby and Swansea will also stick in Turner's mind, and I think he views Wildig as a winger and Purdie as a back-up defender primarily who can play midfield if necessary. The fact we have four strikers presently on the books would suggest two up front will be the norm, as the fourth choice striker would be very limited with regards to game time. What I would say Turner will start with at home would be this (with our current squad): ---------------------Weale Grandison-------Jones-----Hazell-----------JJ Wildig-------Summerfield--Richards-------Wright ----------------Gornell--Morgan Subs: Anyon Goldson Purdie Hall Taylor Doble Bradshaw This is obviously little more than a guess, as the likes of Bradshaw, Taylor, Wildig and Goldson are at an age where they may well have come on leaps and bounds and be considerably better players than they were over the course of last season, and Hazell in particular is unlikely to be as good a player as he was last season with age and, chiefly, his injury taking their toll. We certainly look short of defensive cover, and I fully expect a RB or CB to arrive in the coming weeks and will probably start ahead of Hazell. A striker may also be needed - I think Parry could be a shout as another versatile forward in the Doble role. Much as I like the idea of AJ's Barcelona style system, I think we would get torn apart trying that in League One with Jacobson excellent going forward and Grandison prone to the occasional lollop into the opposition's half leaving Jones pretty much on his own. If I were in charge and was instructed to play a more fluid formation similar in style to AJ's, it would be more like this: ----------------------Weale -----------Grandison--Jones--Hazell --Taylor-------------Richards---------Jacobson -------------Summerfield---Hall --Morgan------------Gornell------------Wright Three centre halfs, two wing backs with license to roam forward (a position I feel would really suit little Jonny Taylor), Richards operating as a defensive midfielder, pulling the strings á la Alonso, then Summerfield and Hall putting numbers in the middle. Gornell would be the focal point, Wright would sit in a similar position to what he does presently, cutting inside onto his favoured right, but with less defensive responsibility. Morgan would also be cutting in - I feel his pace, dribbling ability and work rate would make him excellent out wide in a 3 man forward line, especially when combined with his erratic finishing. However, that's highly unlikely. As for questioning whether Wright and Wildig deserve their places, I feel they do. Both played well last season and both have played at a higher level, and their technical qualities mean they're more likely to excel in League One. Also an interesting point - look how many of our players have experience at a higher level! If we take the first of my two line ups, only Jones hasn't played regularly in League One or above (and he still played for Bristol City once in League One). Anyway, interesting that people complain that we're signing "league two players" when all our starting XI have featured at League One or the Championship level. Plus we may sign more players with similar pedigree.
Lenny I like the later formation but other teams might object as there are 12 players Nice point about the range of higher league experience in the team.
Pah! They won't notice Jonny Taylor creeping in! I can't be bothered to edit that either. I was assuming people won't feel any huge urge to discuss pre-season games, so I won't do match threads unless for them unless anyone really wants me to.
LB, LW or Left Centre Forward? I think he mainly used to play LW but recently played more at LB. Only occasionally as a foward.

do hope doble and bradders get a try, hope el tel and our marv are more on form than last season, is gt still looking for another striker as next season may be pancake days if we still have 4 lemons. time will tell. so far gt' squad on paper are promo materiel.
The second half of last season, Gornell was excellent. He was crucial to most of Collins' goals, and was the better of the two players in the last 5 games. I really do rate him.
agree lenny, strikers should not just be judged by scoring but also by assists. one wonders if there is a table to show who scored last season and how many assists were created by the scorers
I wouldn't have any qualms about El Tel (as AJ likes to call him) up front on his own but would prefer another hitman in to compliment him, just so that we don't play 4-5-1 out of necessity. Also, people may have to accept the fact that we might not have a "20+ Striker".
The top three scorers last season in League 1 had over thirty odd goals each to their name. One is in prison now though so he's out of the equation.
I think our striking options this season will be Gornell up front, with Parry just behind. Doble, Bradshaw & MMM will have to get used to starting on the bench.. But between the lot of em, I think we'll end up with a plus goal difference come May.
what amazing progress for bradders, reaching the bench, although i agree with el tel and parry behind. the question is will either score 20, perhaps our sponsors may sponsor each goal.
In league two, how many clubs in the top half had a player with more than 15 league goals? Swindon won the league comfortably with a top scorer getting 12!
