The reverse at the hands of the Baggies at the weekend was in complete contrast to the last meeting between the two sides in Round 3 of this competition where City strolled to a 3–0 victory courtesy of strikes from Matt Jarvis, Kyle Lafferty and a Sébastien Pocognoli own goal. City chief Alex Neil will no doubt make several changes for the visit to the Toffees and could well experiment with different formations, especially at the back as he looks to get their league form back on track. It's always difficult to second guess the manager's starting line up in these games but expect Cameron Jerome to be brought back into the fold up top and Declan Rudd to be called to arms as custodian. Everton's league form has dipped recently too and they go into the tie on the back of two defeats at the hands of Manchester United and Arsenal respectively. Again Toffees boss Roberto Martinez will inevitably shuffle his pack and make several changes as is now de rigueur in this competition. Regardless of the personel that the Spaniard decides to put out for this one, it will definitely be a stern test for the Canaries and they will do well to progress to the last eight. While league form is paramount for both clubs neither side will want the ignominy of yet another loss, so hopefully we will see a real competitive edge to this one. Roberto Martinez's Match Preview Roberto Martinez talks to the press ahead of tomorrow night's game Alex Neil's Match Preview please log in to view this image City boss Alex Neil City's manager stressed the importance of putting his team’s slide in form behind them if they are to progress on both fronts in cup and league. “Obviously when you don’t win games, you’re not bubbling with confidence. What we’ve got to do is put the games to bed and focus on the next one,” he told reporters at Colney. “Going back to the ones that have happened and dwelling on them isn’t going to help us. We want to see a bit of passion and a bit of pride to make sure that we go and do as well as we possibly can, and hopefully win. “The one thing I will say is that it’s not been the case for the full season. We’ve got through a sticky spell in terms of results and performances over the last three matches, but up until that we were doing well. “We were competing well, we were scoring goals, so it’s not as if it’s been an ongoing trend since the start of the season, but we need to make sure that we buck that trend quickly.” Neil revealed that Dieumerci Mbokani (illness) is a doubt for Tuesday’s game, but he didn’t rule out the possibility of Youssouf Mulumbu (foot) making his full Canaries debut after over two months out. MATCH STATISTICS www.kickoff.co.uk Match History Tuesday’s game will be the 55th meeting between the two sides in all competitions and the third time they have met in the League Cup. City won a third round tie 1-0 at Goodison Park on 30th October 1973, while Everton were 4-1 winners at Carrow Road on 19th November 1986 in the fourth round. Overall, Everton have won 22 of the 54 games played, Norwich have won 16 and there have been 17 draws. The Canaries played the Toffees for the first time on 12th August 1972 at Carrow Road, it was City’s first ever game in the top flight. Norwich’s biggest win against Everton was on 25th September 1993 in a Premier League fixture at Goodison Park where they thrashed the hosts by 5 goals to 1, Efan Ekoku netting 4 times for Mike Walker’s side. Everton’s best win was a 5-0 mauling of the Canaries in a 5th Round FA Cup tie also at Goodison Park on 18thFebruary 1995. The highest aggregate score between the two was a 4-3 victory for City in League Division One (top tier) on 21stMarch 1992. The match finished in a 1-1 draw, fans favourite Jimmy Bone opening the scoring for Norwich before Joe Royle salvaged a draw for the toffees. 1989 Everton beat City 1-0 in an FA Cup semi-final, however this fixture was overshadowed by the dreadful events that were unfolding in the other semi-final at Hillsborough. Had City won this tie, it is often argued as to whether the final would have ever taken place. The fact that the two Liverpool giants had reached the final was probably the deciding factor, as it enabled the whole of Merseyside to come together to grieve. 1993 please log in to view this image Efan Ekoku Efan Ekoku scores four times in a Premier League match for City as they thrash Everton 5-1 at Goodison Park. Controversial 1985 Everton had already been crowned Division 1 Champions when they took to the field to play their final game of the season against relegation threatened Coventry City, if Coventry won they would survive and send Norwich down to the second tier. Everton fielded an understrength side and were convincingly beaten, a situation that would never be allowed today. Norwich were relegated and became the first ever side to win a Wembley cup final and be relegated in the same season. 1994 Mike Walker one of the Canaries greatest ever managers, who led the Canaries to a 3rd place finish in the Premier League's inaugural season, leaves to take the reigns at the Toffees after a fallout with City's much maligned Chairman Robert Chase. Club Connections Those to have turned out for both the Canaries and the Toffees include: Tony Cottee, Carlo Nash, Willie Donachie, Matt Jackson, Gary Megson, Mike Milligan, Ross Jack, Mark Farrington, Asa Hartford, Dave Watson, Joe Royle, Neil Adams and current City 'keeper John Ruddy. Did you know ? City and Everton played each other in the group stages of the Football League Super Cup in 1985 with both ties finishing 1-0 to the home sides. English clubs had been banned from Europe because of the Heysel Stadium disaster involving hooligan fans from Liverpool, so the competition was set up for those that had qualified for European football but couldn’t take part. In truth it was a bad idea and generated little interest from either the clubs or the fans and lasted only one season. The second and third line of your review. It's no big deal and I was sincere when I said great thread.
Well done. Keep doing the match Threads I really enjoy them. Stuck out here in the colonies they are interesting to read before the games, keeps me in touch.
Well I can't lie Munky they do take quite a while to put together but I enjoy doing them. I have to admit I have a dislike for Everton ever since the 1985 debacle, I know but I just can't let it go .... and there's also the Hans Segers conspiracy theory
We've still not forgiven you lot for Mike Walker. Be interesting to see the tam sheet, I'm praying that the hapless Howard is dropped and I'd expect to see the likes of Mirallas, Kone, Besic and Naismith in the starting XI.
If it makes you feel better I can remember a News of the World headline from the mid 50s. It read To-TEN- ham 10 Everton 0/1 I am not sure how many Everton scored. After that I always felt sorry for Everton and they became my second team for a while.
Breaking news re match commentary this evening (see OP) Worth listening to just here the great man's thoughts
So, after we beat them 5 - 1 Mike Walker soon became their new manager, then ColWho stuffed us 7 - 1 after which Paul Lambert was soon enlisted. On that basis, having been annihilated 6 - 2 recently by Newcastle, surely Steve McClaren should be in charge of us by now?
Guesstimate of our line up for tonight; Robles Browning, Funes Mori, Stones, Oviedo Cleverley, McCarthy Lennon, Naismith, Mirallas Kone
oh pooh! There's a small river showing the game - I have to stay up now to see it but I just know it's not going to be worth it
But our most successful (some will argue Dave Stringer was) - odd isn't it. Right man in the right place at the right time.
He drowned at Goodison, the job was too big for him (no offence btw) What he achieved at Norwich in his first spell was brilliant, but it was all of your moons aligning I suppose, and he maybe got slightly fortunate. He never did anything in the game after that did he, including his second spell at Carrow Road. What's your thoughts about tonight mate?
Really difficult to say how AN will set up for this one. Maybe something like this? Rudd Wisdom - Martin - R.Bennett - Olsson Ofoe - Mulumbu - O'Neil - Jarvis Grabban - Lafferty
