In an attempt to galvanise my enthusiasm for tomorrow’s match I have decided to delve into nostalgia, so while I should have been working at one of my clients I got out my quill and inkpot and started to scratch some memories of past Everton matches I’ve been to on a frayed piece of parchment.

One of my earliest visits to Loftus Road (October 1977) was for a match against Everton where we sadly got thumped 5 – 1 thanks to Bob Latchford and some winger called Dave Thomas! As legend has it, in those days well before electronic scoreboards, Stan Bowles has to ask one of their players the score during the match. Maybe he had a bet on!

I can also remember a game in the mid 80s where Simon Stainrod and Pat van den Hauwe were sent off for fighting, I think the final score was 0 – 0.

The only other Everton match I remember we lost 1 – 0 with Graeme Sharp dancing through our defence on a very icy plastic pitch, no one else managed to keep their footing all game.

I can’t remember being at a match against Everton that we won, and with my record of visits this season being equally unrewarding, I’m not sure this is working.

Some of you must have better tales......

Season before 76/77 they beat us 4-0 at LR on the opening game of the season which was horrible. But I remember the one before that in October 75 better when we won 5-0. A repeat of that would do very nice!

75-76, we hammered Everton 5-0, Gerry Francis was awesome that day scoring two and tearing their defence apart, one of his best games for us.

76-77, opening day of the season and we were expecting more of the same and were hammered 0-4.

Easter 93, went to Goodison to see Sir Les score a hat-trick as we routed them 5-3, only a couple of late goals made it respectable as we pissed all over them.

I saw those first three 70s games as I had a season ticket and we never missed a game. Can't remember a bloody thing about any of them. Off to get a brain scan.

Roller, I was less than a month old when you went to that game in oct 77! I remember a few games v everton from the early 90's when we always seemed to win and usually with someone scoring a hat trick. Went to goodison when sir les scored 3 and we won 5 something. My dad and I ate in a cafe before the game, everyone was really nice. One of them showed my dad a really nice knife and my dad bought it off him for all the money he had on him plus his leather jacket, but we didn't take the knife then. Apparantly it was to be posted at a later date.

Also, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the last game at LR with standing in the lower loft was against everton and we won 2-1. That was the 1st and last time I stood there!

I was in the upper loft in '87 when Martin Allen smashed 20 yard first half winner. 1-0 Rangers.
Also went to a few of the 70s games but was a bit young too remember them.

So I feel alot better now don't I? I'm just the 15 years older than you!

It sounds good that your Dad got you both out alive from that meeting!

So any other memories of Sir Les' hatrick?

Well, that was far better than I expected. The faint buds of hope are threatening to emerge.

We all wait now with baited breath for the highlight of the day..... Col’s match report!
