You're daft if you think footballers work 20 minutes a week. In fact it annoys me when anyone says that footballers get paid thousands for 90 minutes of work during the weekend.

They train for hours a day to turn themselves into conditions athletes for the entire season. It ain't as easy as just lazing around for a week and then strolling into the stadium for an hour and a half of footie.

Imagine if you were an athlete or a swimmer you'd train tons more but never earn what these lads get. Yes, I appreciate the hours working but the point I was making was Best is a fringe player..........will be even more fringe when we get new striker...........so that puts him 4th in pecking order.........not bad for a lad who got £3.80 playing for Coventry.

Exactly. And while the crazy wages they get annoys me - they do have short careers as top players, so while they make a lot of money now, most premier league footballers will be living off what they earn during their playing life and the scraps they pick up for commentating / punditry / whatever else...

But it goes with Supply and Demand - footballers get paid huge sums because they have something that we want. If swimming was as entertaining to most of the population, we would be having the exact same chat about swimmers...

Plus, these people are the elite, players from the championship down don't get paid anything like what premiership footballers get. The top swimmers probably get paid a pretty penny from their sponsorships alone.

And he maybe a fringe player, but he is a fringe player for a top tier club. If he is needed he still needs to do a job against the best, so he is still in high demand

Conservative average wage of a PL footballer = £25,000 p/w (exc. all the really high earners) - and I'm being very modest there. £25,000 p/w x 52 = £1,300,000 per year. £1,300,000 x 8 (realistic number of years to earn that amount) = £10,400,000. Even after tax I think they'd be pretty comfortable even if they didn't lift a finger from the day they retire until the day they die.

Now imagine someone earning £30k, £40k, £50k etc per week.

They earn £10,400,000. Take away tax and that's a few million gone already.

Take away the money they've spent whilst earning that amount, and that's another few million gone.

Now lets say they live until they're 80, and need the amount earned from football to last them for the next 50 years. For the sake of having a figure, let's say it's £8million, which is probably far more than it would be in reality. That's only £160,000 a year, or £13 grand a week.

Still a lot of money which they can use to live a luxury lifestyle, but really, they're far from rolling around in millions for the rest of their life. In fact, if they overspend, they could find themselves bankrupt by the time they're 50.

Sometimes I honestly done blame footballers for trying to hoard as much money as they can - especially before retirement.

    This.

4th, 5th or 6th choice, still have to be up early every day and work their arse off in training sessions. And because they are always in the spotlight they have to behave themselves off the pitch as well, hence why Carroll and Nolan got stick in the press for their lifestyles.

What you are forgetting is that if they invest sensibly during their career they will never have to work again.
