One of the great stars of the 60s, remember him from the 66 World Cup and the 68 European Cup Final where he stood and applauded Alex Stepney for a brilliant save in the last minute, a great player who believed in playing the right way. RIP...
A true LEGEND. 733 goals in 745 games and a trophy cabinet to make any player envious. Remember him pictured in a QPR shirt - if only, if only, the things dreams are made of. Always remembered by the football fraternity all over the world. RIP
Great player, indeed one of the all time greats. I saw him play live once, Fulham played Benfica to open their new stand and I went along with my brother. RIP
RIP Fantastic player, along with Pele, one of my footballing heroes of the 1960's, especially during the 1966 World Cup. I was fortunate in 1977 to have the opportunity to see both of them play against Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS at Empire Stadium in the twilight years of their careers. please log in to view this image
Never saw him live but seen loads of footage of him great player..(left footed i believe) Played the beutiful game as it should be played. love the pic with pele in above posts RIP
I only know him by reputation, but he must have been an exceptional player. He apparently scored more than a goal per match for Benfica. Incredible. RIP He is a link to the QPR Report thread which includes a picture of him in our hoops. http://qprreport.proboards.com/thread/38106/portuguese-legend-eusebio-dies
A couple of truly great #10's in 1977, flanking Brian Joy, the year I saw them both play in Vancouver (also Franz Beckenbauer). please log in to view this image "During his professional career, he scored 733 goals in 745 matches." - fantastic stat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eusébio NASL - Taken April 1, 1977 before a game between the Las Vegas Quicksilvers and the New York Cosmos.
I was lucky enough to be at that game Sooper. Had that shot gone in, Benfica would most likely have won the game, but, as you say, Eusebio was classy enough to applaud the save. A great player and a gentleman.
I remember watching the match on telly, he hit the shot so hard the camera lost it for a moment expecting a goal and then panned back to Stepney clinging on to the ball. His presence in the 66 World Cup was the making of him, some fantastic goals and the match against North Korea who had put the Italians out was amazing. They were 3-0 up in half an hour before Eusebio single-handedly took them out with four goals including two penalties that were awarded for fouls on him in a 5-3 win. The hysteria that built up for their semi-final against England was quaint by today's standards but unknown in those days, we really thought he was going to win the cup on his own, but, after moving the match from Goodison to Wembley we took advantage and the rest is history. I still think he was on a level with Pele and certainly the player of that tournament...
