A lot of folk are trying to make a case for that goal yesterday scored by Schick. I've seen comments on this forum suggesting similar but I don't get it... The guy just hit it far into an open goal, the goalkeeper was ridiculously far away from his line. It would be harder to score a free-kick with a wall in front of you and the keeper on his line than it would be to repeat Schick's goal. I've always thought long range efforts like that get more credit than they deserve. It's generally down to really bad goalkeeping. Anyway, I thought I'd conduct one of my legendary polls and see what you guys think. Van Basten Poborsky Maniche Schick Whelan
Van Basten for me...so iconic...great kit too...not a bad finish either...oooft Yesterday’s goal is nowhere near goal of Euros ever....if the Scots had a keeper he’d have gobbled it up...tidy finish mind, no more, no less
I have to agree with Saff about the Schick goal, we see that sort of stuff down in League One. What was the Scottish goalkeeper doing that far up the pitch, at least this lower league goalkeeper had good reason to be, before he let in similar...
MVB is No.1 and Gazza No.2. That goal last night wasn't shabby either also Suker was a decent one, chipping schemichel.
Van Bastens, though I'd forgotten how ludicrous that Poborsky chip was tbh. I doubt anyone during the rest of the championship will score a better goal than Schick did though.
free kicks are meh, they get scored week in week out in every division, goals from the halfway line, there's 1 every few seasons across all divisions.
They might be 'meh' because we are used to seeing them but it takes a far greater skill set to get the ball past a wall and a keeper who is stood on his line, rather than whacking it into an empty net from far out.
You're saying a moving ball is far easier to hit accurately from 50yards than a dead ball from 30. what an absolute crock of ****.
If you're taking a pop from the halfway line then it makes it much easier if the ball is rolling when you strike it. You honestly think it's harder to score into an open goal from 50 yards than it is to score from 30 yards with a wall in front of you and a keeper on the line? You've never played the game.
yes I do think it's easier, that's why there are hundreds of examples on youtube, and goals like Beckham's chip v Wimbledon & Nayim's v Arsenal are so feted.
Generally goals scored from in and around the halfway line are down to goalkeeping error with the opposing player being more or less invited to take a shot. Like yesterday. It was an open goal and the keeper started off closer to the halfway line than his own box.
