So they're trying again to get a European Super League off the ground. This time the proposal is for an open competition with participation based on sporting merit (i.e. There will be promotion and relegation) the lack of which, I believe, was one of the major arguments against it last time.

The fella leading the campaign says that the "foundations of European football are crumbling" and that this will help to prevent it. It seems to me that the foundations of European football are the grassroots and lower league clubs and that these are being starved of much needed income by competitions like the Premier League and Champions League which are designed to make money for their members and participants. To save European football we needed a more equal distribution of money (as was the case with the old format Football League) not another layer of 'elite' football.

They want to keep all the money for themselves because they think they bring it all in. We're seeing next level greed lately in football..Super leauge, dick heads.

Basically if you really think about Barca and Real in the Spanish league they would not allow a fair share of TV revenue and wanted to organise their own tv deals so they could have a bigger share of the cash which meant that other teams received less cash and the league was weakened by their greed making it less attractive to world wide audiences. They have since gone and spunked multi millions away for shots at glory in Europe but are now feeling the Financial pinch 'they are like the snake that eats itself' now they want to have a new European league so they can have more money to compete with premier league clubs because its unfair that the Premier league(who chose to share tv money in a much fairer way) has all the cash. Its because the Premier league is a better competition with a better product. Not saying I fully agree with everything the PL does as I don't but listening to all the drivel from La Liga really annoys me as they allowed the problem to happen in the first place. And I still remember when Real nearly went bust and were given Millions by the Madrid Council to help them be a top team again but that does not get mentioned to often when fair play comes around

Rich or successful people the world over believe that they're "self made". They never seem to understand or acknowledge that they flourished from a foundation that was created by others and that only by standing on those foundations at the exact right moment in time were they able to maximise their opportunity. It's complete narcissism.

Just announced on SSN that the European Court of Justice have ruled that UEFA and FIFA acted against completion law by blocking the formation of the Super League. Wouldn't be surprised to see them try to get this up and running again

It's a whole lot of fuss to rejig what is currently the most lucrative annual tournament in club football.

Well said, would love it if the top 6 or whatever buggered off away from the standard leagues creating a more even playing field. I certainly wouldn’t watch it.

Crap for the fans of the teams involved but the clubs literally don’t care.

It would have been a completely closed competition of the richest clubs just playing each other to scrape as much extra cash as possible without financial restrictions imposed by FIFA. Barcelona only pushed so hard for it as they are in so much **** financially.

    Sounds boring.

I could definitely see this happening - they would of course invite a couple of Saudi sides in to the format and simply call it the Super League

It will eventually end with select teams.from each continent all paid for by PIF and Backed by FIFA as the world super league with the existing FIFA Club World Cup being their version of the FA cup

It's a disgusting proposal. Closing of the European Cup to most clubs man, I know there's next to no chance Sunderland would ever get to the Champions League, but the beauty of football is you can always hold onto the hope we have that one unreal season and sneak in. Likes of Leicester achieved it, decent chance Villa pull it off this year and its because they earned the right.

I see a few comments saying **** those clubs off and ban them from English football, which I understand. But for me I'd be canny gutted if we could never go to Old Trafford or Anfield etc and see Sunderland win, competing with those massive clubs is something that excites me about following Sunderland. Obviously if they push through this then there needs to be massive repercussions for the clubs involved.

Haha, honestly still makes me laugh the way him and sky went on a couple years back about the proposal but when MBS and the Saudi Government bought Newcastle, Neville was saying we need to bring these people to the table and him/sky have basically embraced and said next to nothing about it, scumbags.
