Seems we made 4.5mill from the Europa Cup run last season so that could fund most of Darren Bents transfer fee if we are serious in signing him buy I think his wages are just too big a stumbling block. Be interesting to see if Joke in Ear can match his promise of bringing in some quality signings especially up front.

We performed really well in Europe last, did ourselves and the league proud. I can't pretend though that I'm not happy we are not in it this year. Happy to take this money and run because it was a leech on other resources. The likes of Swansea etc will find this if they get as far as we did.

I still like European nights. There's something very special about them.
I'll have to put up with the visit of Swansea and Cardiff now.

Mate Kinnear doen't even know what day it is. We will get Bent in the next few weeks, if we don't get him we will get no one. Then we will be graced with the immortal quote of 'Couldn't get it over the line' but promises of 'reinforcements in January'.

We are waiting for Cabaye to be sold and then, maybe, we might sign a player. I've thought that way most of the summer and I can't see me changing from that position quite frankly

    Hate to be negative BUT

Each premiership place is worth £750k. If the extra European commitments were the difference between us finishing 16th and, say, 8th, we lost money by being in Europe.

European football is essential to a club like Newcastle United.

It brings in the extra money as you say, obviously finishing in the top 6/7 will bring it's own financial reward from the PL and the prestige of European football attracts better players to the club.

For anyone at the club to say that being in Europe is a negative thing, is purely an idiot. <ok>

:confused:Ok, I get that a double negative makes a positive, but what the heck does a tripple-quadruple-multi negative mean?

<laugh> Don 't listen to me and look at my avatar instead. The answer lies somewhere deep with that cleaverage.

I actually think Europe is a great thing to be involved if you are willing to invest properly and get the required numbers/quality in the squad. We are not however and therefore it is idiotic to hope we are involved because we'll try to do it on a shoestring and end up having a **** season. Your better players will then want to leave or at least become unhappy, and you'll lose out financially.

So whilst the prestige, extra attraction is nice, its only a good thing if you actually use to invest and take the risk of making that jump to the top guns. It is difficult to do that without a sugar daddy (which we don't have) or the worldwide appeal of a Man U or Real Madrid to generate huge income (which we don't have). We'll always be stuck between a rock and a hard place from what I can see.
