As of 2015, Europa League winners WILL get a spot in the following seasons Champions League, UEFA have announced today. This has been on the cards for a while, and is something I welcome to be honest. It will make teams really go all out for the EL, especially in the later stages. It will also make winning the EL worth a Butt load of money, with the Prize fund + TV Money + CL Qualification! Good decision Imo.
I think it's fair but I also think they should abolish the rule that allows CL dropouts to enter the Europa. Not really fair then is it?
At the qualification stages its okay, but once you have qualified for the CL, then you shouldnt drop into the EL if you finish third in your group as we did. I can understand why UEFA have done that, so that some bigger teams end up in the EL (like Utd last year and us this year), to increase interest in the comp. But it does have a whiff of unfairness about it I agree. But getting a CL place for winning Europa, Im all for that...is a good idea.
Anywhere that has further clarification on the new rules? Like what happens if the EL winners qualify for the CL through the league? Does the CL place go to the runners up?
There will still be a maximum of 4 winners that can be handed out by an FA(always based on league, I believe) so no side finishing outside our current quota(top 4) unless they win a European competition. Even then there's still a very unlikely even of the CL and EL winners both coming from the same country and both finishing outside of a CL qualifying league position, inwhich case I believe the 4th positioned team will miss out. The chances of that happening is so remote that even a Spurs fan can be confident of that rule never screwing them over. Basically the easy way to look at it is the top 4 will always go through, the only way anyone else can go through in addition to those is if they win the CL or EL having finished lower in the league.
So, like with us this season for example, if we won the EL but qualified for the CL by our league position, the EL loses its winners CL position, it just goes to no one?
So what happens if both the winners of the Champions League and Europa League are from say, England, and both finish outside the top four? Which two miss out? One would be the 4th placed side, the other?
The Europa winner will not displace anyone. 4th would lose out to the CL winner, but no one loses out to the Europa winner. In that case, England would have 5 teams in the CL.
Ahhh so its pretty much unchanged then, we would get 4 places if the EL winner qualifies for the CL via the league and 5 places if he doesnt. And CL winner displaces the 4th placed team from his league if he finishes outside the top 4, as he already does. Cool
I believe so yes. At a guess I'd say they would be entered into a qualification stage as that's an easier and fairer place to add in an extra team. Only one misses out. They've capped the max number of sides entered into the CL from anyone country at 5, the cap was 4 briefly in the time between inventing their rule for the season after we had 5 in the CL and running up until the end of the 13/14 season when it's replaced with this new one to allow EL winners in.
So to explain it If this rule was in place for the 2011/12 season then Atletico Madrid (EL Winners and outside top 4 in Spain) and Chelsea (CL winners and outside top 4 in England) would both have qualified as tournament winners whilst Spurs would have been gifted their place as the fourth best team in England of that season My question is what would have happened with this season??? Would Spurs be in as we would earn the spot via EL winning
Don't be daft even if we came 3rd our place would probably go to the winners of the Championship. They are Champions after all.
I think thats the idea. To give clubs who otherwise couldnt get into the CL a way of getting in. Im all for it to be honest. Plus it makes the EL a far more lucrative prospect.
