Uefa will stage the Euro 2020 tournament in a number of cities across the continent, the European governing body decided on Thursday. The decision was taken by Uefa's executive committee at a meeting in Lausanne. It means there will be no one country hosting the tournament. The Football Association has already put forward Wembley to Uefa as a possible venue for the final. The announcement will also give hope to Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland hosting some Euro 2020 matches â they too have already expressed their interest to Uefa. Uefa's general secretary Gianni Infantino said: "Some important decisions have been taken. "Uefa Euro 2020 will be staged across the continent, in various major cities, following a decision taken today. A Euro for Europe follows an initial idea by Uefa president Michel Platini. "The response has been extremely positive from all the national associations." Turkey had initially bid to host Euro 2020 and the country's Uefa vice-president Senes Erzik opposed the decision, Infantino confirmed. The format and number of cities that will be involved in the tournament will be decided by Uefa's national teams committee. Infantino said the bidding process for the host cities would start in March and would take a year with decisions made in the spring of 2014. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/dec/06/euro-2020-across-europe-uefa
Sound like a real jolly for the UEFA officials traveling around Europe for a year being entertained in every bidding city, not a bad job if you can get it..
No different to going off on a jolly visiting all the bidding countries under the normal system...thinking about it it's probably worse. Under the old system you needed enough grounds to be able to host the competition so it ruled out a lot of ****holes for visits. Now you only need one ground so basically anywhere in Europe can apply to host games. Oh, and before someone starts about the distances between venues. I read somewhere that there are venues for the World Cup in Brazil that are further apart than places like London and Moscow.
Won't it be cheaper and more convenient to get quick flights to Paris/Barcelona/Milan/Moscow - than it is to get to Lviv, Kharkiv and Wroclaw?
Not every England fan can afford tickets, travel and accomodation- if it's in one country surely it's cheaper to do all 3 then keep on going to the airport and paying for flights to other places and then pay through the arse for them all again. And you forgot the money exchange- not every european nation competing has the Euro.
So, with games being 4 days apart, you could potentially have a home game in London then away games in Kiev and then Lisbon. Isn't that going to knacker them out a bit travelling? It's a ****ing **** idea.
You wouldn't be changing as much money into each currency so I don't see money exchange as an issue. You go into Thomas Cook and say I want £x changing into Euros and £y changing into what ever else it is you need please. It's only 7 extra words in the shop. Flights are cheap, accomodation is usually the problem because when a country is hosting it they jack the prices up astronomically. (lol just remembered the London hotel owner whinging like **** during the Olympics because he'd normally be full but after doubling his prices he was less than half full as though he was a victim)
I believe that the plan is for group games to be played close to each other. So London and Paris may host one group, Barcelona and Milan another etc... Then the quarters will probably be in a relatively close city too. All in all, I imagine that the travel would be FAR easier on the England players than it was in Poland/Ukraine.
FIFA and UEFA are just obsessed with change. They don't seem to give a **** about football traditions and values, it's just constant change for the sake of change, and always things that don't need bloody changing! They drag their heels on the important issues but change random stuff all the time. After Brazil in 2014 are we going to see another majour tournament hosted in a big footballing nation? It seems like they're trying to move it more and more into random countries that really don't give a **** about football, allowing joint-bids so that tiny, pointless countries can host it as a team and now just spreading it all over the place so it can go to as many obscure places as possible.
"Uefa will stage the Euro 2020 tournament in a number of cities across the continent, the European governing body decided on Thursday." How much money was in the brown envelope this time, Michel?
Ahhhh, so UEFA know which countries are going to qualify 8 years before the event ? Actually, I'm playing Devil's Advocate there because as from 2016 there will be 24 teams competing in the finals. That's nearly half of all teams affiliated to UEFA. It will basically devalue the qualifying groups, unless of course it's planned to seed the top teams straight into the finals without having to qualify thus reducing fixture congestion for the top European club teams.
At least we won't have that far to travel if we fancy taking in a game or two... Rob Harris @RobHarris NEW: Wembley to host FOUR more matches at Euro 2020 on top of the semifinal and final. It has replaced Brussels as a venue.
Such a ****ing stupid idea. The idea of more than two countries hosting it is ****ing absurd, unless you did a UK/Ireland one.
I quite like the idea, it gives more people, more access to games. It also makes travel and accommodation easier and cheaper because its hosted in major cities that already have the infrastructure in place. Its probably not as great for those that like to go for the tournaments duration and soak up the atmosphere in the host country, but not many people have the time or money to do that anyway. People will moan about anything, give it a go and if it doesn't work don't do it again, simple.
They would if you had group games in Vancouver, Madrid, Delhi and Perth, at least you'd rack up some air miles.
One host, one Country. Anything else is ****e. Same as Video refs, change for change sake. **** it. #AllamOut
