If we pull out, Denmark certainly will. They only joined in the first place because we did, as we are the biggest customer for Danish dairy products. Norway never joined the EU, and would probably also join any new alliance. They were EFTA members before. One way or another, I agree with Billy - let's get to hell out of this.

On the radio they were saying that as well as this money to be paid to the EU, there are other payments to come to the UK as part of the same readjustments to the different elements of how our payments are worked out, so we might even end up as a net gainer!

But that is not a good anti EU story so it never gets publicity

I wonder if, as a British taxpayer, I could get away with the argument that because I had had an unexpected increase in my income, I did not need to pay an additional amount of tax on it? So if the principle is acceptable, the problem here lies in the stupidity of the increase coming as a surprise and being required to be paid at short notice. That's just the actions of a dullard... BTW, the Dutch are also required to pay 692€M which is more per capita, so us Brits should stop whinging like we are the only ones affected. Not reading the small print is not a defence.

It's not just about the UK - every single member of the EU is affected in one way or another. It just happens that because of two factors - GDP size (factor of population size) and relative growth rates, the UK is expected to hand over a larger aggregate some of money than other countries (even though some countries will have to pay a larger amount per capita) - according to an agreement that is 19 years old. The timing and communication are awful, the legitimacy is just plain simple. Regrettably, the UK has almost no narrative explaining the value of membership in the EU, despite the fact that fat head politicians argued passionately for Scotland to stay in the British Union. Well, it's like the same, but fiscally much more important.....

We only ever get one side of the argument in the media, but have a look around at noticeboards of work going on in this area and it is frightening to think this region could suddenly lose the prospect of seeing 'funded by the European initiative for....' If this country didn't pay into Europe you can guarantee that hardly any of the money saved would be spent up here.

I think the surcharge is very fair. After all, we're only £1,450,000,000,000 in the crap as it is.

They're trying to get money out of the Greeks & Italians anarl. Good luck with that one, EU fellahs!

Never a ****ing chance of it mate.
The Krauts & the Frogs will see to that.
Oh aye, don't wait on Cameron's promise of a referendum either.
You'll still be waiting when you're 90, regardless of which of the gang of three gain power.

Yes, whether we're the net gainer or the net loser, it is definitely ****.

In 1975, we were systematically lied to. We voted to enter a (quote) Common Market, not a political union. If we had 'observers' in an African country and they saw what went on here in '75, they'd denounce it as electoral corruption. And that is what it was. Net gainer or net loser, I want that 1975 electoral corruption putting right. I have mixed feelings about Cameron, as I have about any politician. But I will vote either Tory or UKIP at the next election just to get the stinking EU issue sorted.

If the British public vote to remain in the EU then I will honour it, not because I like it, but because that's democracy.
But I hope to god we come out. I'd like nothing more to do with the megalomanic lying b**tards.

You're mistaken in thinking I'd be waiting for that referendum mate, I'd prefer we didn't leave the EU. That said I wouldn't take part in the referendum, I simply don't know enough about the matter to vote one way or the other.

I don't think we will end up net earners personally but it's the same as Less Hope Than Neville says above. We should be paying in more because we earned more. Not doing so would be pretty Tory of us.

We have the 7th Largest economy on the planet, a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, a member of the G8 and G20, a leading member of NATO and the Commonwealth, a history as being a truly global trading nation... Yes I think we will be alright standing alone! Europe is the only major regional economy that isn't growing so why handcuff ourselves to a corpse when there are far greater opportunities for us to trade with other nations! The EU needs us more than we need them!

I know enough about it - we were lied to, pure and simple. In any other country in the world, it would be called electoral corruption. So how come the Europhiles can't call it that here?
