Get you dosh on our Alexei being crowned player of the year. His only rival is Emilio. I have it on good authority that 75% of the St Mirren votes went to our God, and if the rest of the non old scum team players do likewise!!! The most common reason.....he's NOT an old scum player
Oh a Celtic player won it. What a surprise. Never a "shoo in" against the twisted sisters. I'd guess that Alexi's yellow/ red card count probably went against him. Shame really, great player. Probably the best I've seen at Killie. Btw is he now finished for the season because of his bookings? I saw that in one red top that both he and Jamie Hamill are out of the last game of the season whereas another said the three game ban starts now. Any thoughts?
Izaguerre was rightly named POTY by his fellow pros. Not seen much of your player tbh but he would have to have been unbelievable to be better than Izzy or Kayal (not nominated). Nice to see a player outside of the OF be in the running though.
Losa and Iziguirre were the two outstanding candidates. There is no shame in not winning purely getting nominated as a non OF player is an achievement in itself. If Kayal had hit his current form earlier he would have been a potential winner. If the Fish had stayed and continued his scoring form he may well have been a contender. Perhaps the Journalists will do the write thing (do you see what I did there?) when it comes to their award.
Kayal was never off form, he missed the first 3 or 4 months of the season because of injury, imho I would have him as POTY. I am of course biased. No doubt we will hear cries that "The Fish" is now seeing the form that he showed in the opening months of the season, it took him about 3 months to find it after his injury so he's a no from me. If Eremenko wins it I will have no complaints because the hacks have seen more of him than I have and it would be arrogance to suggest that the best player in the SPL ""MUST be plying his trade with Celtic or Rangers.
Don't know what "Fish" you are reffering to Dev, but I am pretty sure Tam means Conor Sammon who wasn't injured this season, but left the SPL as 2nd top goal scorer for Wigan in the January window.
me and my big piece of inside information.WAIT till I get that St Mirren guy grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Scottish football sucks. Just shows what a parochial country we live in. Most of the professional footballers will vote for one of the in firm as they most likely support either of them. Pathetic. IMO Eremenko is light years ahead of Izaguerre, who is made to look better because he has better players playing beside him than Eremenko has. The Dhim is a good player but he doesn't make defence splitting passes like Losa can.
Couldn't agree more K61. The SPFA award has not been won by an non-OF player in over 20 years; which seems to imply that the players pick the best player from the best team. Total lack of imagination. Izagurre helped last season's runners-up challenge for the title. Eremenko helped last season's nearly relegated team finish 5th or 6th. Of course, there are some on here might accuse us of just wanting the Killie player to win, but the truth is the very fact that a player from an unfashionable diddy team gets nominated whether it be Killie or whoever means that they have obviously caught the eye more than players who are live on the telly every other weekend.
Eremnko is a quality player, but a non OF player seldom wins POTY. ****e of course but thats the world we live in. PLEASE BEAT CELTIC!!!
Yes he does, he's set up numerous goals/chances for us. And besides, he's a fullback rather than an attacking midfielder. Eremenko has looked more than decent at times but has gone missing on several occasions when I've seen him. I've never seen Izaguirre look anything other than class. You all seem to be making the assumption that Izaguirre only won because he's at Celtic. Is it not possible that his fellow pros genuinely thought he was the best player over the course of the season?
The fact of the matter is that Eremenko is playing for a diddy team and we were very lucky to have him. Admiral what percentage of goals did Izaguerre set up for you.?? I will bet my seaon ticket at Ipox it was less than Eremenko did for us.As for looking anything other than class its a hell of a lot easier playing the Ashley Cole role than at the heart of nearly all our moves.I agree that when he didnt play neither did we,can you say the same about Izaguerre.?? If an attacking full back/wing back is this years "black" then a certain Ben Gordon who played 1/2 a season with us would also have been in the frame had he played the whole of the season. Also the media play a large role in the players choice, they may play against a certain player 3 times or more but IMO what they see and read has a greater bearing. So tell me how many more hours and pages does the in firm attract or get when compared to the diddy teams? As for his transfer value ã700000 alledgedly will get him add another 0 and that will be about right.
As the Admiral said, Izzy is a FULL BACK, Eremenko is an attacking midfielder. The PLAYERS voted for Izzy not the press.
What a fatuous, meaningless argument. You know Izzy only scored 1 goal so that makes his season poorer than Darryl Murphy. He mas made a grand total of zero saves, so his season is poorer than Zaluska's etc etc etc. Or perhaps those facts are more indicative of playing in different positions. According to this website, http://www.football-lineups.com/tourn/SPL_2010-2011/Stats/ Eremenko has actually had fewer assists than Maguire at Aberdeen and the same as Stokes, Hooper, Goodwillie and Weiss. And he's scored less goals than all of them. Does that prove that eg Weiss has had a better season than Eremenko? No, but it does show how bald stats could potentially be used to (mis)represent a player's performance. Your whole argument seems to be just sour grapes. Eremenko has had a decent season, sufficiently so that his fellow pros voted him amongst the top four performers. Why is it impossible to accept that Izaguirre has also had a tremendous season, and that his fellow pros voted him number 1 not out of some weird OF bias but because more of them thought he was that little bit better/more consistent or whatever? And ã7m for Eremenko? To put it mildly, I don't think so.
Personally I don't have a problem with Izaguerre winiing it, although obviously I would have preferred Ermenko to get the vote. I also don't think that you can compare hard stats in these instances, however as I said earlier Eremenko almost single-handely under Mixu's management turned the most negative team in Scottish football into one of the most attractive and improved their results as well. Obviously, that wasn't enough to get the player's votes. Fine its their decision, but IMO it does show that non-OF players have little or no chance of winning this title. I haven't seen much of Izaguerre, but I find it fairly indicitive of how poor the SPL is when a left back is our best player, following on from the old man who won it last year. As most adult males in Scotland support one of the OF, then I suppose it should be no surprise that the bulk of Scottish players do to! PS: Eremenko is on loan at RP, sadly his transfer fee has nothing to do with us. Still it means that if the OF want him they'll hav to play European prices rather than SPL-diddy team prices
Admiral it wasnt me that brought up the assists stat....Line 1 in your 1st post ...fatuous indeed, pedantic even ,you set out your argument I countered with mine .. I get accused of fatuousness. What a very stereotypical OF stance. You then raise the website stats that seem to counter your argument ....now thats fatuous. You also conveniently ignore the part the media play when it comes to these sort of things. The " ballot papers" were handed out around February and the players were given several weeks to fill them in.Agents know this and it doesnt take a Kenny Shiels to work out that that would be a good time for some PR. The Herald did a very nice piece on Losa in early March and I suspect but cant confirm, OK I admit I cant be arsed to find out and read about the OF, that there were several pieces on the other contenders. As a utiliser of PR I know its power. The average SPL football players IQ can be as high as Kate Middletons waistsize and as an attender at several KFC POTY dinners/dances believe me if the Super soaraway Hun or the Daily Rebel says so some of these guys treat it like the first few chapters of Genesis. I also cant agree with your fruit analogy, I see myself as more of a lemon....thick skinned, acidic on the tongue, refreshing on itself but best taken with pinch of salt and tequila sometimes. In ancient Egypt they used them for enemas now theres an invitation for a fatuous comment This forum is now IMO just beginning to come alive.I liked 606 but hated the obvious OF bias, heres hoping to more friendly banter ridden confrontations. Note to self more slow burning posts:
Yet you said that you "have it on good authority that 75% of the St Mirren votes went to our God"? Are spin doctors not allowed into St Mirren's training ground?
I implied Izaguirre won it because he played for one of the old firm and that most professional footballers in Scotland cannot see beyond either of them. Nothing will change my opinion on that issue. It is far easier to look good in a team like Celtic than it is in a team like Kilmarnock - Eremenko made a far more telling impact on my team than Izaguerre did for Celtic. As much as I did not like Jefferies I do believe he should have won manager of the year several years ago when we finished in the top 6, got to the League Cup final and also never lost a game to a team who finished below us that season. If my memory also serves me correct we also got the most points out of all the teams in the top 6 after the split. Yet who got manager of the year that season? Strachan I believe - it had to one of the infirm. At least this season McGlynn won manager of the year, recognising what he has achieved with limited resources. Pity they didn't use the same criteria for players.
I didn't make any claims to any stats regarding Izaguirre whatsoever. You said Izzy does not/can not make defence splitting passes ("he doesn't make defence splitting passes like Losa can"), I merely said he can and does (and they result in chances/goals), I made no claim as to any specific number nor whether he'd made more or less than any other player. It was you who engaged in a 'who sets up more goals argument' not me ("Admiral what percentage of goals did Izaguerre set up for you.?? I will bet my seaon ticket at Ipox it was less than Eremenko did for us"). That is undoubtedly a fatuous argument. I pointed out in my first post that it was hardly a fair comparison given that the players are in different positions and in my second post (given that you'd brought up the question of who had set up more) that if that was the sole criteria Eremenko would trail behind other players (like Weiss etc) who clearly haven't had as good a season as he has. It seems pretty clear you have chip on the shoulder regarding the OF. You're apparently completely incapable of entertaining the possibility that Izaguirre genuinely was regarded by his fellow pros as the best player this season, rather it was yet another example of OF bias.
