After Dave Jones’s post-match rant, there seemed to be a consensus on the BBC highlights show last Saturday that Wednesday had been hard done by as regards the two penalty shouts that were denied. In both cases there was some contact - a hand on the shoulder from Traore, and a brush with a knee from Barton - but in neither instance was the contact heavy enough to have caused the subsequent collapse to the floor. Therefore they were dives.

Leroy Rosenior trotted out the old saw about being ‘entitled to go down’ under any contact. Surely this view needs to be challenged?

I believe that the ref got these two incidents right and that is not just because it went our favour.

Your right it does, what really miffs me is the law is in place that seems to protect the forwards. What about the defenders shouldn't they get equal protection from an ill timed challenge or the dreaded dive, I know the laws of the game will punish for these offences but it rarely happens it appears to be 90% to 10% in the forwards favour.

Traore's was no way a penalty but we were lucky to get away with Barton's.

I believe it was challenged to the point of tedium on here at the time.

I meant the view in general not the specific cases from last week.

This "entitlement" seems to be something that has crept in over the last few years and is kind off encouraged by these so called analysts.......IMO there is NO right to go down you should only hit the floor if you have been fouled in a way that your legs are taken from under you and you can not continue standing up right.....

Hate to say this but it is the prima donnas in the Premier League that have started this trend and there appears now to be a mind set that "entitlement" is the norm.....it is a cheats charter....

Fair enough Stroller. I can only go from when I was growing up - you fall over when you are physically unable to avoid falling over. Anything else is cheating. Leroy Rosenior is an idiot.

It's not just him though, as Tramore says there seems to be a concensus among the so-called experts that this behaviour is ok.

Because I'd been watching the cricket, I made a pithy remark about hotspot being used to determine "contact" or not. Was meant as a joke, but if all contact is entitlement - then its going to have to go that way!

    100% agreed.

Whenever there is now any contact in the box, the interpretation of the rules has gone too far in favour of the attacking player IMHO, and it is changing the game as we know it for the worse. It's become very cynical and seems to be about “drawing the foul” or being “entitled” to go down, with no expectation that the attacking player should even try and stay on his feet. It all makes for a depressing spectacle in my view, but that’s the way the game has gone.

However, the real problem here is the referees being inconsistent. Some will give the pen, others will wave play on. That’s usually the thing which makes people so angry.

Having said that, Dave Jones is, and always has been, a grade A plum.

One of the reasons we loved Mackie. It just wasn't in his nature to dive.

This is one aspect of the game that truly sickens me. The phrase of OT thread title makes my skin crawl. How on earth did this encouragement to cheat ever become an acceptable part of the game?

It became acceptable when Sky pumped money into the Premiership mate.

    Personally it disgusts me!!

I feel the same as everyone else on here, can't stand cheats! Both were dives, no doubt about it. I think half the time these forwards try to "win" the penalty because they bottle out of shooting. Always take the easier option. Wasn't it the same player in both challenges? Who also skied it from 3 yards out with an open goal? Be he wished there was someone to dive over then as well......

Just watching highlights programme now and would have started this very thread, had it not already been up. Nines' sentence sums it up - when did this entitled to go down phrase become part of our game? It's like an admission of guilt - no, I didn't naturally fall over, I made the decision to. Goes hand in hand with things like claiming an insurance payout for a make believe injury following a car accident. It's a softening of the human spirit, it's pathetic. I want no part of it.

I was worried for a moment that Barton already on a yellow card would pick up a second and a red, plus a penalty shot.

I remember how unfair it was at Old Trafford in our first season
when poor old Shaun Derry got a straight red card and we also conceded a penalty shot for a challenge which was borderline and some diver went over like a sack of potatoes.
