I thought EUEFA had made new rules where premiership teams had to have a minimum number of English players in the side. yet most premiership clubs, inc United, are buying foreign players.

Can anyone explain the rules, and from when it comes up as a requirement

"Home Grown" players as opposed to English players as you can't legally require someone to be English or discriminate against other EU nationals. Can still be foreigners as long as they are signed up by the club as teenagers. Expect younger foreign stars to become ever more popular and expensive!

The way I understand it you need 'home-grown' players, not English necessarily.

Home grown meaning you've been playing in England for three years by the time you are 21, so essentially if a club buys kids from all over the world when they are 18 or younger then they will be home grown in 3 years time.

I think clubs need 8 home grown players in their squad of 25, where they could have trained at any english club (not necessarily that club).

Thanks all, but exactly when does this come into fruition. From what I can see, there isn't a single prem cub who abide by it

  7. It started in the 2012-13 season <ok>

There was an article a couple of months back that showed the clubs that hadn't fulfilled the ruling.

    Thanks Gerrez.

So by the rules, al you need is 8 home grown players to rotate on the bench, whilst the other 17 can be foreign. Seems like yet another strange FA rule

There have been discussion of the FA making the rules stricter in Britain going as far as to say only 3 non-EU nationals in the entire squad (including reserves, and U21 players).

  11. But yes, clubs don't have to include players under 21 but they can allocated them to fulfill the eight homegrown players so long as they've done three years with a English or Welsh club after their eighteenth birthday

Rodriguez, Cork, Reed, Gallagher, JWP, Shaw, Lallana, Clyne, Chambers - all English and young. Schneiderlin would definitely qualify. These are all players with first team experience; there are more in the squad. It'd be even better if we hadn't sold Sir Richard.

Even if we sold Lallana and Shaw, we'd still be comfortably within any ruling. Quite possible if you put youth development before buying success.

  13. Liverpool fulfill the quota with ease too; Jones, Johnson, Flanagan, Gerrard, Henderson, Allen, Studge, Kelly and now Lambert too. Plus Sterling and Wisdom can both be included if needs be as well.

Smalling, Fletcher, Welbeck, Cleverley, Rafael, Carrick, Rooney, Giggs, Rio, Evans, Amos, Fabio and Young made 13 for us this season. Macheda would also count if he wasn't on loan, and Jones will count when he turns 21.

Remember it also counts for players who have played in England and then abroad. So Fabregas actually counts as home grown for Chelsea now.

There aren't any punishments for failing to name eight home grown players - you just don't get a full squad in that case. So Chelsea only got a squad of 22 as only Terry, Cole, Lampard, Cahill and Bertrand qualified.

Don't think he'll ever count. Joined you in July 2011, turned 21 in May 2013. So only two seasons spent in England before turning 21 = not homegrown. Fabregas will replace Lampard, dunno who will replace Cole.

Lukaku will count if he stays, and MacEachran if he ever gets a look in. Whatever happened to him?
