Honestly, I look at England's lineup and I see a collection of better players than their opponents. There is something systematically wrong with the way England is approaching the WC competition. I won't pretend to know what that is, but it seems to my amateur brain that Hodgson was far too defensive-minded. England has the talent to win the World Cup. Someone will figure out why they don't fare better and start fixing the problem.

I think anther slant on this argument is do we have any quality English managers to take on the task rebuilding the England football team from the ground up, back up staff the lot? We have one of the best in our own back yard at the moment, it has been said Roy isn't up to it so who is it to be to take on the task? Answers on a postage stamp.

Agreed 100% and spot on ^^^^ this.

In fact i dont think that the parents of the next England World Cup winners have been born yet. That is how far away we are.

Thankfully ive seen England win the world cup and what a glorious day it was. Sadly not a day that will be repeated anytime soon. Maybe year 2070 ? then again........

Mine goes up by £4 a month but i have the multi-room package. I have binned BT sport. It is she-ite.

But the full sky package is still cheaper than a good night out. VFM imo.

Ask yourself this :- How many England players would Germany take from us if they could ?

Even when England have world class players England managers waste them. Not since euro 96 have England has a team and when Hoddle binned Gazza in 98 that was it for me.

The way that Terry - A.Cole were treated / ended there England careers was a disgrace. With better management England could have had a defence of Terry - Cahill and Cole. Then at least the qtrs were on. All this planning for the future is nonsense. England dont have a future the ways things stand.

The entire 23 man England WC squad will be tainted after Brazil and most of them deserve to be. As for Jack Wilshere, he needs to grow up and stay fit for starters.

I was 16 when we won , I remeber 4 of us were watching it in our mates house, b/w tele, didn't know until much later that the game had been filmed in colour. The second German goal silenced all 4 of us, oh no it can't be. The 3rd England goal, the Russian linesman said yes the referee point to the spot, euphoria once again. Then the immortal words that stick in my mind all these years later 'They think its all over ............... it is now' Thank you Kenneth Wolstenholme, you tend to forget what brilliant football commentators we had then as well, David Coleman, Jimmy Hill, and Barry Davis, Brian Moore, John Motson, Martin Tyler and others a bit later on.

    Mildly interesting fact:
The infamous Russian linesman - everyone knows who you mean when you say that - wasnt Russian.

You inadvertently put the Rothman's Football Yearbook reading Motson in the list of decent commentators.

Tofiq Bahramov, the linesman in question, was from Azerbaijani, which was part of the USSR. When he died they renamed the national stadium after him.

He just always seemed to be there even if he wasn't :) but he knew his stuff even if he got a bit carried away at times, think he's a bit of an icon these days of mediocre comentators. Its all analysis these days and I think most football savvy supporters could give a good after match synopsis with all the technology at hand, its a bit like snooker, commentators have all the computer tricks to play with but whispering Ted Lowe was hard to beat.

Same here, same age as you. As I have said before, City had just won Division 3, England were World Champions and on the night I had been too see one of my favourite groups, The Spencer Davis group. This country was the centre for fashion and music. as I made my way unsteadily to my girlfriend's house in the early hours I thought to myself 'Can life get any better?". 48 years later I know know the answer was no.

I always liked Peter Allis who didn't believe in interupting the game with irrelevant chatter when there was something interesting to watch. An American once asked if he was alright as there had been such a long period of silence. Another who put modern commentators to shame was Bill McClaren who put in balanced reports even when Scotland were involved.

Indeed. Never seen another 16 year old from this country with Steve Winwood's talent.

Number 1 when we won the World Cup was Out Of Time. The only week Chris Farlowe spent at number 1,but what a week' The two Saturday's before the World Cup one I saw the Small Faces and The Who. Those were the days!

He wasn't from a part of Russia. He was from a part of the USSR. Russia was also part of the USSR.

I was going to include Archie McPhearson who use to get rather animated but that's the thing you see everything these days has to be explained at idiot level, he made 5 assists, and 27 passes, then when a player comes off there is a graph telling you he ran x number of metres, what a load of cobblers. We could see players running themselves into the gound we could see the crunching tackles we didn't need some purile commentry telling us so, if a goal was scored at Boothferry Park you could hear the response back at West Park now you can hardly hear a thing when you pass the KC (and some people would say even when you are in the KC).

Knocked The Beatles off the No1 spot if I remember or stopped them getting to No1. Some great groups you saw there Castro my list as a bit more mundane, The Honycombes :) and The Bee Gees although the latter were brilliant, I was the only guy in 6 rows of girls lol.
