....Not in my life time !---I thought I'd have a bit of mischief on World Cup Final day ! I'm not getting carried away by the " success " of the England football team. What have they actually done at this tournament ? ----- well they certainly haven't scored too many goals from open play (( none against any of the better sides they've met )). -------- I'm not counting any goals against mighty Tunisia and Panama - because even grumpygit, with one leg cut off, could manage to hit the barn door that Sterling can't find. England had a huge opportunity to win the cup - other nations were falling over themselves to lose ! Italy stayed at home ( it is the mating season in Rome ) - Germany only lost because they forgot to bring their towels ( they didn't know it was beach weather in Russia ). Brazil thought they were ON the beach - and just laid down and rolled over ( as many times as possible ). Spain - their players were asleep - they usually have a siesta at the same time as the kick offs. Belgium ( against France ), were confused that a team of red,white and blue could actually play football -- they thought they were playing England- and didn't really try -- and of course - they were so desperate to LOSE against England in the group stages that they sent on their fringe players - and STILL England couldn't score from open play or even draw, let alone win - TWICE. ...... and that is why England ended up 3rd 'LOSERS'. All the other 'main' contenders should feel gutted that they wasted their chances to win the competition -- at least they created some !
I pretty much agree with a lot of what you say. I never believed we would get pass Croatia and i never believed we could beat Belgium. I think some teams got knocked out because they chose to cheat rather than use their capable ability to win a game. Am i advocating VAR here
There is one advantage in age in football or actually maybe 2. One is you get a cheaper season ticket and the other is you are likely to have seen England win the World Cup once in your lifetime. The down side is you will be long dead before you get a chance to see it twice. The last time in 1966 most households had a huge 14 to 16 inch black and white tele at most and there were no dolly bird shots from the crowd. Some household still didn't even have a tele.
