It’s a strange one and difficult to think of reasons why he missed out. The first theory that came to mind is Patto has had tons of high quality game time this season whereas the others probably need it. Wouldn’t be fair on the lad but the U21 bosses could have explained it to him - it’s not you it’s us, kind of thing.
Can only guess that they picked the other lads because they've played more games than Patterson throughout their careers so far? Patto has played more football at a higher level than any of those lads however. He'll get his chance, at least now he cant get injured on international duty
Yeah. from a selfish point of view I'm happy that he can now sit on the beach for a couple of weeks and come back for preseason fully rested and fit
The only logical reason for me is that the other three have been on the whole qualifying cycle and the regime didn't think it was fair for them to miss out.
Selfishly im very happy Patterson can rest and then be ready to go again for us next season with no distractions. One of the other reasons he might have missed out is that he is 23 where as the other 3 Keepers are 21 or under so Patterson would have had to have been used as one of the older players above the age of 21, and England are only allowed to pick 2 in their squad if my memory serves me correctly
That's probably a good shout as a reason. But neither the less the fact he's been called into the provisional squad is a great thing. It shows how well recognised he is now and good proof of how well our academy is working. It's not out of possibility that any injuries to Pickford, Pope, Ramsdale etc. could see him earn a call up to the senior squad if he keeps improving.
